  1. Roles and Responsibilities of the Branch Treasurer Revised September 2023 The People Behind the Poppy

  2. This training package is designed to introduce new and existing Branch Treasurers to the various resources available to them and to ensure they are cognizant of their roles & responsibilities. It should be read in conjunction with the General By-Laws of the Royal Canadian Legion, Alberta- Northwest NWT Command By-Laws and its Manual of Information. The People Behind the Poppy

Your Role and What Council expects of you The responsibility of the Treasurer is to ensure a true and accurate account of all monies received and paid out by the Branch and a record of all other financial transactions is maintained. All funds must be deposited in the name of the Branch, and in a bank or institution designated by the Branch and authorized by the General By-Laws. The Treasurer is accountable to the President, Executive Committee and the general membership. The People Behind the Poppy

The Treasurers Responsibilities In conjunction with the Branch Poppy Trust Chair, ensure Annual Poppy Trust Fund Statements are submitted to Alberta- Northwest Command, with an information copy to the appropriate District Commander, not later than January 31st for the previous Poppy Year . Ensure Year End Financial Statements including a Balance Sheet are submitted annually to the Alberta-Northwest Command Accountant, with an information copy to the appropriate District Commander, not later than May 31st for the previous year in an accepted formatted. Monthly, submit Financial Reports to the District Commander. These should be given to the Branch Secretary for transmittal with the Minutes of the Meeting at which they were presented.   5. The Treasurers Responsibilities Submit to Command any other reports or returns requested by the Command Accountant. Ensure all Branch cheques, drafts, or orders of payment of money are signed by the Chair of the Financial Committee (Treasurer) and the Branch President or such person(s) as the Executive Committee may designate. No two signing authorities may be related to each other nor live in the same domicile. Submit to Command any other reports or returns requested by the Command Accountant. The People Behind the Poppy

  6. The Treasurers duties as detailed in the AB- NWT Command Manual of Information? You must: Ensure the Branch books are kept up-to-date at all times, and available for production whenever requested by an authority. Present complete financial statements to Executive and General Meetings. If you are unable to attend a meeting, you should provide the information to the President for presentation. Implement cash handling procedures and monitor that they are being followed. Assist with the development of a budget and business plan annually. Ensure all remittances and reports are completed on time. Ensure annual financial statements are audited or reviewed as per the General By- Laws. Work with Branch Committees whose duties involve cash handling. Ensure separate accounting for gaming funds and Poppy funds. Ensure an accurate inventory of all items is completed including bar and food. The People Behind the Poppy
