Germ theory of disease Various theories like Super natural theory of disease spontaneous generation, miasmatic theory( attributing to noxious air and vapours) Theory of spontaneous generation
In 1860 , Louis Pasteur demonstrated presence of bacteria in air. In 1873 he advanced the Germ theory of disease. In 1877, Robert Koch showed that anthrax was caused by a bacteria. The discoveries of Pasteur and Koch confirmed Germ theory of disease. Various microbes discovered afterwards Gonococcus in 1847 Typhoid bacillus, pneumococcus in 1880 Tubercle bacillus in 1882 Cholera vibrio in 1883 Diptheria bacillus in 1884, and so on.
Preventive medicine Dates back to 18thcentury James advocates taking of fresh fruits and vegetables to prevent scurvy. Edward Jenner discovered vaccination against small pox. Pasteur s anti rabies vaccine (1883) Cholera vaccine (1892) Antiseptics and disinfectants(1827-1912) In 1898, Ross demonstrated malaria is transmitted by anopheles.
