Career & Diploma Programmes Language Development College Requirements vs. IB Requirements Language is key to culture DP = Take IB Course/Exam CP = take course or engage in independent study 50 hours 12 months Monthly reflection Supervisor to monitor/assist December 2022-February 2024 http://euphrates.org/learning-languages-free-online/
Internal & External Assessments Internal = with teacher guidance/feedback & scoring (20-25% of IB score sent to colleges - it is real) Broken into smaller, more manageable chunks Models how to deal with large, long-term assignments Final deadline is NOT flexible Not submitting anything that IB can score by the final deadline = failing condition (as far as IB is concerned) History, SL Math, History, Bio (practice run), 1-year courses External = seated, timed exam OR work submitted to be scored by someone outside of HHS (75-80%) Each subject has different types/styles of external assessments Intended to allow students to demonstrate skills AND depth of knowledge rather than simple memorization
Management Don t stop believing! Study habits/techniques Cell phones are essential and detrimental at the same time Location, duration, and environment matter Will have work every night Flash cards work miracles (even in math) Keeping up with it all Need some kind of planner/reminder Dependence on Remind 101 is a recipe for disaster Organization Time is money (well, not money in this case, but really important) Communication If something is confusing ASK! If that doesn t clear it up, ASK AGAIN and/or stay for extra help! http://smartbooksonline.com.au/true-value-time-business-owner/
Parent Pointers Encourage Attitude is everything Keep the benefits in mind and in their minds More of the same does not always lead to better results. Examine study methods Make adjustments to use research-backed strategies Communication With the Student With the Teacher(s) With Mr. Snow/Mrs. Gray Help with proper cognitive development They need consequences when they mess up (but still encourage)
Commitment Being a part of the IB Program is a choice, and that choice comes with expectations. Students who are in the program are making a commitment to complete the IB Core requirements (TOK/PPS, CAS, EE/RP, LD) during their junior year. MCSD pays $120 per exam for IB students IF students fail to complete the core requirements, it will put their magnet status in jeopardy. Following through with commitments is a lifelong lesson. Parents, please stress the importance of perseverance and the value of commitment. Refer to the form on the back of the schedule request, and please read and sign for more details on program requirements.
Dual Enrollment Not compatible with IBDP (unless during summer) Can work for IB Course students (zoned for HHS) IBCP Healthcare students dual enroll at Columbus Tech (most are CNA, other options are available). IBCP Computer Science students have an option at CSU for cybersecurity if they complete their pathway in 11th grade. While free college is tempting, that is not the whole story Selective University Admissions Credit Transfer NOT Guaranteed Awards & Recognition Scholarship Opportunities Preparation for College demands Self-Development
IB Course Student ONLY AVAILABLE TO ZONED STUDENTS Elect to take one or more IB Diploma courses, but not the full program (IBDP or IBCP). Miss out on the benefits of completing the IB Core (TOK/PPS, CAS, EE/RP, LD) Miss out on earning the additional credential (IB Diploma or Career-related Certificate) Miss out on some of the resume builders available to DP and CP students which could impact college acceptance or scholarships It is better college preparation than not taking any challenging courses, and it could still translate to college credits at no cost to you. (+HOPE rigor)
