  3. Communication Binder Communication Binder Agenda: Check for behavior indicators and notes. Return to School (Left) & Keep at Home (Right) Homework Homework Weekly iReady Reading and Math (45 minutes each subject) Reading and Math homework will be sent home as needed for additional support at home.

  4. Our CLASS RULES be respectful be responsible be caring be safe and healthy follow directions when given keep our hands and feet to ourselves follow class procedures and Bryant rules

  5. BEHAVIOR Expectations Students are expected to follow school and class rules daily. Students will be given reminders/warnings when they are not following the rules. If the behavior continues, the student will loose a piece of tape . If the student does not have tape to give, then a note will be written in the student s agenda for that day and a behavior mark will be indicated in the front of the binder. If a student receives 3 behavior marks regarding a specific behavior or 5 marks all together, they will receive a needs improvement on their report card in that area. Please help us by checking your child s behavior sheet daily..

Follows school and classroom rules

  7. INCENTIVES for good behavior Positive reinforcement will be used to encourage great behavior and choices. Students can earn extra tape for going above and beyond. Each student has their tape card to save for rewards.

  8. What to expect in READING Reading is Pronouncing words correctly Identifying words and their meaning Understanding the meaning of a text Making connections with a text Showing appropriate rate, intonation, & expression of a text (fluency) Students will be exposed to whole group, small group, and independent reading

  9. What to expect in READING Systematic phonics instruction that provides multi-level lessons that develop word-recognition strategies and skills. This program enables students to become independent and confident readers and writers.

  10. What to expect in READING Whole Group Reading Teacher demonstrates appropriate reading behaviors while reading text. Teacher reads with proper fluency, rhythm, and intonation. Teacher models how to think about and discuss a text through questioning and think aloud.

  11. What to expect in READING Small Group Reading Flexible groups Students in the group have a common need Students have their own text Teacher explicitly guides students addressing their needs

  12. What to expect in READING Independent Reading Students read independently with a purpose Students select text on their reading level Students practice strategies modeled in Whole Group instruction Students respond to their reading

What to expect in READING 11st st Grade Grade 2 2nd nd Grade Grade Decoding simple 1 or 2 syllable words Decoding multisyllabic words Basic comprehension (who, what, when, where, how, why questions that can be found directly in the text) Deeper comprehension (who, what, when, where, how, and why questions that can NOT be found directly in the text) Slower and choppier fluency Simpler vocabulary Faster and smoother fluency More complex vocabulary Second grade is a big year for students to realize that reading is for enjoyment and gaining knowledge, NOT a chore that must be done daily.

  14. What to expect in WRITING Modes of writing are explicitly taught, modeled, and practiced through writer s workshop. Modes: Expository writing-explaining or providing information Narrative writing-telling a story or describing an experience Opinion writing-convincing or proving a point, expressing an opinion

  15. What to expect in WRITING FriYAY Journal Every Friday, students will write about their week in their FriYAY journal. This is one way to implement and reinforce grammar and writing crafts. Please read and initial or write a letter back to your child each week. The FriYAY journal should come back to school each Monday.

  16. What to expect in SOCIAL STUDIES Embedded in the ELA block Geography people, places, environments, maps, climates Economics goods, services, and resources Government citizens, community leaders, rules and laws History cultural diversity, timelines, national symbols

Understand and Compare 3-digit numbers Extending Addition& Subtraction within 1,000 Estimate, Measure, and Compare Length Work with Money Work with Equal Groups- arrays, odd/even Partition Shapes- halves, fourths, thirds

What to expect in SCIENCE Strands of Learning Nature of Science Inquiry, process skills, LTI, and STEM Physical Science forces and motion, gravity, magnets, properties of matter, measurable properties, changes in matter, and forms of energy Earth and Space Science Sun s energy, weather, rocks, and soil Life Science Human body, life cycles, basic needs

  20. ASSESSMENT Involves ongoing informal and formal data collection. Teachers look at patterns over time.
