Located in Chicago s South Loop Enrollment of about 1200 students Diverse Student Body Large first generation, low income population Known as a leader in Experience Based Learning Currently awaiting HLC approval for merger with Roosevelt University RMUI will become Robert Morris College of Experiential Learning within Roosevelt
Experience Based Learning and Faculty RMUI is a teaching university and embedding experiences into the classroom has been a part of the culture for many years Push for EBL came from top down Teaching Institute established by President in early 2000s Teaching Institute formalized EBL in 2015 Part of Long Range Plan Shared best practices Started to record EBL activities DARA Model instituted Experience Based Learning Institute Created 2019 Experiences, activities and projects are recorded, tracked, shared, duplicated and assessed Shared responsibility of Career Readiness by all faculty
DARA Model Robert Morris University s Experience- based Learning (EbL) Model Robert Morris University s Experience-based Learning (EbL) Model is a standardized process for the development and delivery of experiential activities through the fulfillment of four steps: Design:Experiences are created with intentionality to connect with the course learning outcomes and actualize the full design, act, reflect, acknowledge (DARA) process. Act:Students learn through immersion in an experience that relates to a real-life situation. Reflect:Students are provided opportunities to cogitate on the learning outcomes of the experience. Acknowledge:Students are provided opportunities to connect how the transferable skills gained or honed in the experience will apply to future academic, personal, and/or professional endeavors.
Immersion in Experience Based Learning Experience Based Learning is found across all curriculums Taxonomy Overview, 5 Levels Business HR Training Exercise (Level 3) Designing an Organization (Level 3) Liberal Arts Design a screen play for a talk show with characters from the story Maggie (Level 2) Investigate local sustainable food at supermarket (Level 2) Culinary Pop up Restaurant (Level 4) Exercise & Sports Studies Assess and design a program for muscle endurance (Level 2) Graphic Design & Business Students Design Entrepreneurship-- international partnership working for live client (Level 5)
EBL Career Curriculum EBL100-College as Career EBL200-Developing Your Professional Presence EBL300-Personal Narrative & Branding EBL400-Life-long Career Strategy
Integration Projects Students work with real clients as consultants Clients are found at incubators or through referrals Many are start ups, small businesses or not-for-profits Projects relate to students majors, examples include: Marketing Strategy Social Media Plan Creating healthy recipes for specific medical conditions Building websites Space Planning, including floor plans Event Planning for fundraisers Designing marketing and branding material
Mandatory Internships All students are required to complete an internship prior to graduating Most majors require 100 hours in the 10 week quarter Culinary 180 hours Nursing and Surgical Technology have multiple rotations required in their curriculum Some flexibility built in Students can use a current employer Must complete a project outside of their normal job Students can sub an Integration Project for their internship
