  1. Introduction 0 Prof. L 0 Lou poll e (it s Italian) 0 Proper email 0 slupoli@cse.tamu.edu 0 Teaching for 15+ years 0 Not a perfectionist, but nearly OCD 0 Very organized, not happy when not 0 Not perfect 0 Can be sarcastic (working on it) 0 Can be considered abrasive 0 But I m being straight with you!! (not trying to be mean or rude)

  2. How I run class 0 Sense of Humor 0 Gonna need it 0 Will have group exercises during lecture 0 Active learning 0 Will ask you to come to the board

  3. My Pet Peeves 0 Student that is lost, but doesn t tell me 0 Student that asks (begs) to turn something in late 0 Showing up late 0 First 15 minutes is usually the most important 0 I know there might be circumstances 0 It s the repeat offenders that bother me 0 Hurts your team if doing flipped 0 Finds something wrong/needed editing, but doesn t tell me until the end 0 Excuses

  4. Participation 0 Be active in class 0 Come to board 0 Raise your hand 0 Answer questions 0 volunteer

  5. Class Preparation 0 Everything is already prepared for you in Blackboard 0 Notes/Videos 0 Word Doc/YouTube 0 Let me know if something needs to be fixed/improved 0 Schedule 0 Syllabus (cover later) 0 Where can I find help?

  6. Assignments 0 Exams 0 Usually tell you what s on it!! 0 (I don t like surprised either, unless good) 0 Used to determine what areas we can improve 0 Flipped Lab 0 Cover more later 0 Help achieve class objectives, enforce new material 0 Projects 0 Help achieve class objectives, enforce new material

  7. Grading 0 Let s look at the syllabus 0 On Blackboard too 0 Consistency 0 Every week (almost), expect the same setup 0 Lecture, then watch some videos, then Flipped (graded) 0 Grades returned quickly (usually a week) 0 Exams 0 (already covered)

  8. Learning Environment 0 Welcoming, Intense, but Active as possible 0 What I strive for, but not always accomplish 0 Keeps you wake and interested 0 Exercises during a lecture 0 On laptop 0 On paper 0 10 15 minutes

  9. Why I love this class 0 Basics and New stuff!!! 0 Theory you learn 0 Syntax/Semantics 0 New Stuff you learn 0 Scheme and Java 0 At the end, you really appreciate how easy it is for us now, compared to those who starting in computing 40 years ago!!

  10. Book, PPTs, and my Notes 0 The book and PPTs do not match!! 0 Weird 0 The PPTs are more in a logical sequence (breakdown) 0 But book is more details and better examples 0 My notes are both, plus my own thoughts, plus some research

  11. Homework 0 There really is none but . 0 Review notes and videos for the Flipped Class 0 Flipped class is basically your homework! 0 Be prepared!!

  12. Flipping (What is it?) 0 In class time is replaced with a graded lab with exercises 0 Lectures are broken up into smaller videos that contain graphics, demonstrations, etc 0 You watch the videos on your own time 0 before class that is

  13. What Flipping is not 0 It is not 0 a replacement for me! 0 I am still your main resource 0 you are more than welcome to see me if anything comes up 0 the course watered down 0 matter of fact, I get MORE in since I edit how much I talk!! 0 easy for me to do! 0 I personally created and continue to add the videos

  14. Why are we using Flipping? 0 For me 0 can focus on those who need help or just don t understand 0 If I get common questions I answer them immediately, but also go over it in class 0 For you 0 Many (but not all) learn just as much 0 View videos on your own time (there is a time span) 0 still have the same support (Instructor/TA) 0 graphics and lecturers are much cleaner and faster than in class, getting to the point

  15. What happens during Flipping 0 OUT OF CLASS (HOMEWORK) 0 You review details and short videos of the SAME material you have in class 0 My notes are still there!! 0 IN-CLASS 0 Have a group lab or exercise on what you learned 0 Ask any questions you have 0 I m walking around helping instead of teaching to those that already know it

  16. Advantages to Flipped Classes 0 SOME of you will get the same learning as if I lectured to you 0 You view the videos on your OWN time 0 Videos are short (5 minutes max) for your short attention span 0 Videos have examples 0 Videos use graphics and are smoother than what I can do in the classroom 0 YOU CAN STILL ASK QUESTIONS!!!

  17. After a Flipped Class 0 PLEASE give me your feedback 0 This only helps you and everyone else 0 Even if you think it s stupid 0 Will take a survey 0 Tell me if I missed something, or something SHOULD be there!!

  18. How do I know when we have a FLIPPED topic? 0 look at BB Calendar

  19. Laptops in Class 0 I am for, but to an extent 0 Will ask you to close at times 0 But also will ask you to use at times as well 0 Exercises 0 Tests 0 Communication 0 In-Class labs

  20. Dispelling some rumors 0 Class is easy 0 Added much more work 0 Work is more tedious 0 Like Scheme!! Just wait!! 0 Class is boring 0 Adding active Learning exercises 0 More exercises 0 More projects 0 One you get to pick your own!!

  21. Common Accolades about the class 0 Group work help me better understand material 0 Class was not boring

  22. Teams 0 You will be placed into teams of 2 0 Will pick a letter from the cup 0 Join up after selection 0 This will be your group for a while 0 Adjustments are only made in extreme circumstances

  23. Responsiveness 0 Do not contact me through BB 0 Please use my slupoli@cse.tamu.edu email 0 Yes, there is another account, that is used for spam 0 Usually answer within 24 hours 0 Except weekend 0 Questions in class 0 Absolutely!! 0 There many be times that I will say, let's talk after class 0 Don t take offense, may need a lot of time to explain, can show you a better example, etc

  24. Availability 0 In class 0 questions, or strolling around during flipped labs 0 Email (covered) 0 Office hours 0 Outside of office hours 0 Fine, let s set something up 0 Zachary (and the University) have some great resources for us to meet!

  25. Grading

  26. Questions? 0 If not, we re getting to work!!

  27. Those you want a letter of recommendation 0 I get 50+ requests each year 0 I do not grant all 0 Those that: 0 Participate in class 0 Answer questions 0 Come to the board to solve problems 0 Etc 0 Are proactive 0 see me or the TA 0 Show for class (not matter an A or not)

  28. Making this class work for you 0 Learning PHP 0 (instead of Python) 0 Then you get to pick for Project 2!! 0 Group project 0 Anything you can add to your resume
