Welcome to Phoenix Debate 2023-2024
The Rock Ridge Phoenix Debate Team is a competitive Virginia High School League activity 2 In fact, we are the first VHSL activity dating back to 1913! We compete in two leagues The VHSL (Virginia High School League) and the Washington Arlington Catholic Forensic League (WACFL)
Research and understand important current issues Gain confidence and poise as a public speaker Why Should I Join Debate? Compete for awards and honors Meet and compete with debaters from other schools Qualify for regional, state, and national debate tournaments 3
Your Choices: Lincoln Douglas - Public Forum - Policy - Student Congress 4 Debate event clinics offered the week of Sept. 11th, 2022. In-person practices begin on Tuesday, September 19th, 2022. - Saturday tournaments once per month (one virtual in December) - If you qualify, your season continues with: Metrofinals in March and NCFL Grand Nationals in May - Select Debaters will be chosen to compete in the VHSL in March-April
Public Forum: Two-person teams debate controversial topics in current events Topics range from domestic issues like gun control to global issues like U.S.-China relations. If discussing and debating current events is what interests you, then Public Forum is a great fit! Plus, you get to work with a partner. Please note: Because PF is so popular, you must qualify to be selected as a returning debater after your first debate year, otherwise you can do 5
Policy (new): Two-person teams debate policy plans introduced by one side Topics relate to what could be done by the federal government (e.x. U.S. gov should fund transportation infrastructure) If you love research, critical thinking, and want to explore U.S. domestic/foreign policy, then try it out! Offered on Wednesdays, so you can try it out along with another type of debate 6
Lincoln Douglas: LD is a one-on-one debate based on philosophical and social values. Our topics focus on issues of welfare and morality globally and domestically If you re interested in philosophical debates, and arguing about what s right or wrong, then LD is for you! 7
Student Congress: Involves researching current issues and drafting legislation that can be debated in a mock legislative assembly. It s a great way to learn parliamentary procedure, engage in legislating, and hone your speaking skills with short three-minute speeches. This is also a great event for meeting students from other schools and working with your own teammates, as there will be about 20 students in a chamber. 8
HOW DO I CHOOSE? ATTEND CLINICS!!! YOU ARE ENCOURAGED TO GO TO AS MANY CLINICS AS YOU WANT - SIGN UP BEFORE YOU LEAVE TODAY! POLICY DEBATE PUBLIC FORUM Thursday: Sept 14 Room: L403 STUDENT CONGRESS Monday: Sept 11 Room: 1404 LINCOLN DOUGLAS Tuesday: Sept 12 Room: 1408 Wednesday: Sept 13 Room: 1404 All clinics will run from 4:30-5:30 p.m. in person after school Regular practices start the week of Sept. 18th. 9
RULES & REQUIREMENTS 10 #1 #2 #3 Practices are twice a week . You are allowed three excused absences per quarter to provide some flexibility. Attend our clinics the week of September 11 and make a decision on which debate event you want to pursue by September 19. You must complete online registration by Thursday, September 21 and pay team dues by Friday, October 6. That s a hard deadline because our season starts in October. #5 #4 Tournaments are mostly all day long on Saturdays starting in October. You must meet team requirements to be registered. Debate is an activity that requires time and commitment. If you can t make it to the practices because of another commitment, then you may want to reconsider joining. Certain exceptions are made for seasonal athletes. You must maintain at least a 3.0 unweighted GPA for VHSL eligibility requirements.
TO REGISTER FOR THE TEAM, PLEASE DO THE FOLLOWING NO LATER THAN SEPTEMBER 21st (PAYMENT DUE BY FRIDAY, OCTOBER 6th) CHECK THE DEBATE TEAM WEB PAGE ON THE RRHS WEBSITE FOR INFORMATION AND THE LINKS TO THE REQUIRED ONLINE REGISTRATION FORM - MUST BE COMPLETED BY SEPTEMBER 21 *PAY THE NON-REFUNDABLE DUES OF $85 VIA THE RRHS PAYMENT PORTAL AND COMPLETE THE UNIVERSAL FIELD FORM BY OCTOBER 6 PLEASE REMEMBER: *WE RE A TEAM, NOT A CLUB *MANDATORY ATTENDANCE AT PRACTICES *PARENTS ARE ASKED TO JUDGE AT LEAST ONCE
