  1. Maymester 2017 ARTL 310: Music and Dance in Paris Salon Culture

  2. Course Description During this twenty-four day Maymester course in Paris, students will explore moments in Parisian salon culture as sites of artistic inspiration and collaboration. In doing so, students will investigate the cross-cultural legacy of Paris, and reflect on their own positions as global ambassadors of music, dance, and culture.

  3. Salons Throughout the history of Paris, artists and intellectuals have gathered in the drawing rooms of notable salonni res to exchange new ideas and refine their aesthetic tastes.

  4. Week One Medieval and Early Modern Performing Arts and Patronage Walking tour of Haussmann s Paris, from Galerie Vivienne to the Eiffel Tower Visit to Notre Dame Visit to St. Chapelle Take a day trip to Versailles Attend the Orchestre de Paris performance of Chansons d Auvergene de Cateloube at Philharmonie de Paris.

  5. Week Two Artistic Inspiration in the Belle poque Montmartre Mus e D Orsay Left bank excursion, including La Sorbonne, Le Jardin du Luxembourg, and Shakespeare & Co. Mus e du Louvre Paris Op ra Garnier Attend performance of Eug ne On guine at Paris Op ra Bastille Attend performance of Robbins/Balanchine at Paris Op ra Garnier

  6. Week Three Modernity, Progress, Cultural Appropriation Institut du Monde Arabe Theatre du Champs-Elysees Centre Pompidou Street art and hip-hop in Belleville Cimiti res Montparnasse and P re-Lachaise

Program FACULTY Joanna Demers, Associate Professor of Music History Jackie Kopcsak, Associate Professor of Practice in Dance DATES Depart Los Angeles on Friday, May 12 Arrive Paris on Saturday, May 13 (designated group arrival) Depart Paris on Sunday, June 4 COURSE INSTRUCTION 2 units of spring tuition Three weeks long Classes Monday through Thursday (most at visit site)

Program ACCENT Provides logistical and staff support Center with computer access, a library, and a study area 24/7 access to emergency contact HEALTH INSURANCE USC Aetna Health Insurance Plan or USC Health Insurance Plan for Students Studying Overseas SAFETY Students are considered adults and are expected be responsible.

Program LODGING Double/triple occupancy rooms in shared student apartments TRANSPORTATION Pick-up from airport (if arriving on Saturday) Paris transit card for bus and metro MEALS Welcome and farewell meals covered All other meals on own, unless we decide as a group to have some additional dinners out

Costs FIXED COSTS* PERSONAL COSTS Transportation: $160 Course Visits: $920 Accommodations: $925 ACCENT Free: $550 Total: $2,555 * Assumes 20 students Food & Miscellaneous: $1,800 ($75/day) USC Student Health Insurance Plan for Students Studying Overseas: approx. $200 Airfare: $1,000-$1,500 Additional expenses are financial aid eligible with a petition
