  2. 2 minute challenge Sociology is the study of society but it covers a whole range of topics, including very significant issues and everyday life. In pairs try to list as many topic areas that we study in sociology your aim is to get into double figures! Time: 2 minutes

  3. Whats the link? Choose 6 of the topic areas and write them randomly across a whole page. Education Work Gender Your job is to make links between them draw a line between topics that link together, and then along the line explain what the link is. Social class Disability Poverty Crime Ethnicity Religion Time: 10 minutes

  4. A different time or place? It s time to use your imagination You were either born at the start of the 20th century, or born in another country. How would your life be different? Time: 5 minutes

  6. What is culture? 1) Define the word culture . 2) Write a quick guide to British culture for people visiting Britain for the first time you need to come up with five key pieces of information that you think visitors should know. Time: 5 minutes

  7. Ranking values Draw a continuum line across your page with least important at one end and most important at the other end. Respect for life Gaining possessions Helping people in poverty Being successful Place these 8 values along the continuum you need to annotate your reasons for placing them where you have. Academic success The right to privacy Honesty and integrity Respecting authority Time: 10 minutes

  8. Norms and deviation 1) Identify 5 norms we adhere to in our daily lives. 2) Pick one of those norms and describe what might happen to someone who chooses to deviate from that norm (e.g. queue jumping). Time: 5 minutes

  9. Secondary socialisation In your table group, mind map all the different ways we experience secondary socialisation how do these agents of socialisation reinforce norms and values, and what happens if we don t conform? Time: 10 minutes

  10. Nature vs nurture What makes us behave the way we do? Is it learned? Or is it down to instinct? Complete a table for nature vs nurture. Overall which is most important? Time: 5 minutes

  11. Founding Fathers Think about Durkheim, Marx and Weber. What were their key contributions to the study of sociology? What did they have in common? Time: 5 minutes

  12. Founding Fathers - Durkheim Durkheim argued that society was like the human body he referred to this as the organic analogy. What did he mean by this? Time: 5 minutes

  15. Consensus vs conflict 1) Define what we mean by consensus theory and conflict theory. 2) Give examples of sociological perspectives for both. 3) Do you think that consensus or conflict is better for society? Time: 5 minutes
