Living Labs Toolbox Discovery Trail (Avastusrada) Jaanus Terasmaa Liisa Puusepp 27.11.2017
What is it? How can it be useful in your educational research project? The Discovery Trail (avastusrada.ee) is a browser-based application that helps you create interactive outdoor pathways, where players can follow marked interactive trails, answer questions, get information, do exercises, study surroundings. Originally created for centres of environmental education with focus on teaching environmental and sustainability issues, but are now widely used in school also (kool.avastusrada.ee). Discovery Trail is a browser-based application - player's needs smartphone or a tablet with GPS and mobile data. There is no need to download anything, it works with all operation systems. Educators can create trails for different target groups (topics, age, surroundings, language etc), players will follow marked interactive trails, answer questions, get information, do exercises, study surroundings. The questions/tasks opens only if the player is in certain predefined distance from trailpoint. The tasks can be either information board, multiple choice test, open text responses or photo question.
What data do you get? Data you get: The educator has real-time overview of players progress and location (safety). The educator get responses in real-time, semiautomatic control - depending on the task type it may be already marked as correct/incorrect. It is possible to download players responses to table format (csv-file) or to send directly to Google Drive for further analysis. Ethics and privacy: The data players (or teams) provide is connected with the name they use for registering to the game, but not with their e-mail or any other personal information.
How to play?
How to make new trail? avastusrada uus rada
I want to use it! how do I get it? The Discovery Trail (avastusrada.ee) is free to use for educators and free to play for everyone - all trails are freely available on website.
