World of Work: Professional Networking
What is professional networking? It s often talked about in the world of work, but what does it actually mean? Class discussion: - What is professional networking and how do professionals network? - Why do you think professional networking could be important?
Why network? We ve all heard the saying, It s about who you know . That s why networking is important- having contacts in different types of industries can be really helpful when you re moving forward in your career. A business owner may want to get to know professionals from other industries to share advice and support. An unemployed person may want to find out what jobs are available in a company by networking with its employees. A student may want to discover more about working in a particular industry by connecting with those already working in it.
How do you network? Networking used to be predominantly face-to-face, but to meet the demands of our fast-paced society there are now plenty of online ways to connect with professionals too: Face-to-face networking: - Networking events - Conferences/ Expos - Whenever you re introduced to someone new! Online networking: - Professional networking sites (e.g. Linkedin) - Networking apps (e.g. Shapr) - Social media (e.g. Twitter, Facebook)
Activity You have been invited to the opening of a new, large retail store in town. The owner wants to get to know the local businesses better, so has decided to turn it into a networking event. She has invited professionals from a wide range of careers and industries to attend. You will each be given a job role and you will be attending the event in that role. Your task is to discover as many of the other attendees roles as possible without directly asking them what their job is.
The rules! Don t show anyone else the role you ve been given! You couldask Do you work in the ___________ sector? Do you work in an office/outside? But you can t ask What do you do? Can you spell out your job role?
Reflection Discuss with a partner: - What types of questions did you have to ask? - How did this help you to deduce what the other person s job role was? - Why do you think professional networking is important? - Which Unifrog tool could help you to discover more about a career that has interested you today?
Bonus activity Using the Unifrog Careers Library, search for one career that you has interested you from today s session and look into the post- school pathway that could lead to it. Click the heart to save it to your Favourite Guides!
