Apakah yang menyebabkan fenomena Northen lights atau Aurora Borealis berlaku? Pada lapisan manakah fenomena Aurora ini berlaku?
Aurora borealis Utara Aurora australis Selatan The light appears in many forms from patches or scaterred clouds of light to streamers, arcs, rippling curtains or shooting rays that light up the sky with an eerie glow
Aurora hijau- kekuningan pudar pula terjadi akibat perlanggaran partikel elektron dengan atom oksigen. Manakala Aurora merah terjadi akibat perlanggaran partikel dengan atom oksigen beraltitud tinggi Elektron dan proton daripada cahaya matahari berlanggar dengan partikel yang terdapat pada lapisan atmosfera Misalnya, Aurora biru- ungu terjadi akibat perlanggaran partikel elektron dengan molekul nitrogen
Fenomena Aurora berlaku pada lapisan ionosfera (termosfera). Lapisan Termosfera terletak di atas mesosfera dan di bawah eksosfera. Lapisan ini hanya mempunyai sedikit sahaja udara. Fenomena Aurora terhasil di sini hasil tindak balas angin suria dengan medan magnet bumi. Di lapisan ini juga sinaran uv akan menyebabkan pengionan.
