Explore the fascinating world of identifying patterns and resources beyond our planet in this insightful study funded by the National Science Foundation. Delve into the features of different maps, discuss possible formations, resources, and engage in a hands-on Break Out activity to locate additional resources on Planet Y. Learn about Mars exploration basics and watch NASA mission videos to deepen your understanding.

  1. Unit 6.2: Identifying Patterns and Exploring Beyond our Planet for Resources This work was funded by the National Science Foundation through grant #2013338, Teaching with Investigation and Design in Science (TIDeS). The opinions, findings, conclusions, and recommendations expressed are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the views of the NSF.

  2. Small Group Homework Discussion Discuss and compare identified features and explanation of processes with your group: For map on slide #1, what is the main feature in this photo? How did this feature form? What are possible resources that could be found in this area? For map on slide #2, what is the main feature in this photo? How did this feature form? What are possible resources that could be found in this area? For map on slide #3, what is the main feature in this photo? How did this feature form? What are possible resources that could be found in this area?

  3. Planet Y Slide 1

  4. Planet Y Slide 2

  5. Planet Y Slide 3

  6. Break Out 1: The Return of Planet Y 1. Visit HiRISE Browse Map 2. Change the Background to elevation and uncheck any boxes that may be checked 3. View features on the map and make a claim on where additional resources may be based on your data and features identified 4. Support your argument with evidence. 5. Group Brainstorm: What would be the best way for scientists to confirm resources are in the areas you have selected?

  7. Planet Y Presentations

  8. Which Planet is represented by Planet Y?

  9. Exploring Mars- The Basics 1. Watch NASA Mission Videos: #AskNASA How Do You Build a Mars Rover? Challenges of Getting to Mars: Selecting a Landing Site Mars in a Minute: How Do You Choose a Landing Site? Mars in a Minute: How Do You Get to Mars? Mars in a Minute: How Do You Land on Mars?

  10. Break Out #2: Exploring Mars- The Basics 1. What are key elements that your team needs to think about when it comes to landing on Mars? Be specific. 2. Since these videos are based on exploring Mars, what factors may your team need to consider for other planets such as Venus, Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, or Uranus? Factors could be the same as in the videos or different. List at least 3 for each planet. 3. Come up with one question that you have about each planet (that can be answered by a future mission) and write it on a post it.
