Associated Members WG Meeting April 10th 2024 Topics Departure of Ana Pipio & proposal to offer the chair of the Associated members WG to an Associated Member (PolyMtl) The potential shift of CLUSTER from a European to an International network and it s impact on the current differentiation between Associated and Full members (In-depth discussion) Recommandations for the GA April 10th 2024 3
The possible internationalisation of CLUSTER Let s take a step back first Is this the right question ? To what identified problem or limit could this be the solution ? Why is this considered ? What are we trying to achieve as a network and what have we achieved so far ? What limits have we encountered in our current situation ? What are our actual strengths as a network ? Do we have a collective vision of what we want to become (as a network) ? 4
CLUSTER as a European focused network Pros Cons Can collaborate in all European projects as full partners Less travel expenses Less time zones considerations Can concentrate more on eurocentric challenges and objectives Size ? Similar cultural backgrounds (easier to manage) ? Missed opportunities of going beyond the european borders Less responsive to worlwide challenges and objectives Overlapping with European University Alliances 5
CLUSTER as a Global network Pros Cons More diversity in point of views ? Opportunities of going beyond the european borders More responsive to worlwide challenges and objectives Less overlapping with European University Alliances More attractive for new non European members ? Different cultural and educational backgrounds may make it more complicated to manage & more difficult to understand each other (more challenging) Higher level of engagement required (travel, time zones) Do non European members have solutions for funding student mobility & staff mobility ? 6
Is it pertinent to revisit the Associated Partner status (and why) ? If Cluster remains a European focus network : If Cluster becomes a Global network : 7
Defining the membership(s) if Cluster remains a European focus network : Benefits for non-European partners (what is in it for them) Expectations regarding the non European partners (what s in it for us ) 8
Defining the membership(s) if Cluster becomes a Global network : Benefits for non-European partners (what is in it for them) Expectations regarding the non European partners (what s in it for us ) 9
Additional considerations Other requirements for full membership : Membership fees : 10
Recommandations for the GA Regarding the potential internationalisation of CLUSTER : The WG is in favor of opening the network to internationalisation Some challenges identified A maximum size to be defined Do we still want to maintain a maximum number of non European members ? Not clear yet exactly how we would differentiate ourselves from other global networks (like T.I.M.E. association, for example) Regarding the current differentiation between Associated and Full members : The WG is in favor of suppressing this distinction The WG also suggest that the requirements for new members should be expanded 12
