The two sets of sisters you have encountered in the last two texts include one sister who embraces her background and another who assimilates to a new culture. Choose a pair of girls (those who embrace their background OR those who assimilate), and outline a brief essay in which you explain their attitudes and cultures. Be sure to: Write a thesis statement explaining both sisters cultures and attitudes about their culture. Each person needs a copy on their own paper. Choose an organizational structure* suitable to your subject. Write a clear thesis that identifies your characters and their similarities and differences. Include textual evidence to support your explanations. Cite the paragraph you are quoting in parenthesis following textual evidence/quote. For this compare/contrast essay, you might consider the following possible outline: Introduction write out a. Hook author, title [TAG] b. Thesis [done as a table group] Body paragraph bullet/outline Sisters who accept & celebrate their heritage a. Mira b. What is the evidence that she celebrates her heritage? Text HAPA In Hapa, by Kristen Lee, she writes, People say [ What are you? ] as a pickup line in a bar or a question to prove their own assumption about my race (41). Textual support THIS SHOWS THAT Lee is often and unsuspectingly questioned about her physical appearance because she is half Asian and people don t know how to label her. THIS IS BECAUSE Commentary Most people like to categorize others because it makes it easier for them to process that individual through their cultural lens, to judge them. Because culture affects the way people view others and the world, knowing what ethnicity someone identifies with can aid in understanding or judging where they come from. Commentary
