What is a "Health Science" Career?? That answer could be many, many things! Well known pathways Doctor, nurse, pharmacist, physical therapist, x-ray tech But so many other pathways to healthcare at different education levels Respiratory therapist, sonography tech, nurse aide, medical assistant, scrub tech, lab technologist, pharmacy tech, audiologist, speech pathologist, mental health counselor, medical billing/coding etc, etc. And those are just human medical care!!
Certificate/Associate's Degree (Usually 1-2 years after high school/GED) Nurse Aide/Patient Care Tech Registered nurse Medical Assistant Respiratory therapist Pharmacy Tech Lab technologist Telemetry Tech Health Information Technology EMT Nuclear Med tech Radiology/Sonography Tech Scrub Tech Physical Therapy Assistant Etc.
Bachelor's Degree Nurse Nutritionist Mental Health Counselor Social Worker Management/Administration Quality Management/Metrics Biomedical Engineer Etc
Careers in High Demand Medical Assistants Nursing Assistants Nursing Medical and clinical technicians Respiratory Therapy Nurse Practitioners/Physician Assistants Health Information Technologists
Medical/Clinical Techs Lab Techs Radiology Techs X-ray, Sonography Radiation Techs Works with radiologist to administer medication Surgical Techs Scrub techs, vascular tech
Nursing jobs Nurse Aide Usually works in a nursing home/long term care facility or in the hospital Job duties usually pertain to daily, routine care of the patient Medical Assistant Usually works in offices More involved in procedural care of patient. Ie can draw blood, perform EKGs, help with in office procedures, etc. Nurse Usually works in a hospital setting. In a certain area of medicine, but can switch around Advanced nursing NPs, CRNA, RN-FA
Respiratory Therapy Can be an associate's or a bachelor's degree. Specializing in airway management and optimization Involved in routine and acute care of a patient Highlighted during COVID - invaluable to treating respiratory patients.
Health Information Technology Laws put in place by HIPAA act and reinforced by ACA required all medical offices/hospitals etc to maintain electronic medical records Optimization and utilization of hardware and software to manage patient health information Invaluable resource as healthcare and data tracking becomes a higher priority.
What if I don't like working with people? Medical coding/billing Administration IT in healthcare Lab Technician/Clinical lab sciences Veterinarian/Vet tech Health care quality management/tracking
What does it take to succeed in health sciences? Patience (and patients) Desire to care for others Desire to learn and constantly get better Enjoy challenges Able to work as a team And at the end of the day... Kindness and a desire to make someone's day better.
Ways you can prepare/look into health science careers: Research Look into different areas, read people's stories, don't get your information from medical TV shows Reach out to people in your area of interest Ask questions Shadow someone for a day Take science and math in high school Not every career will require these but it will likely be beneficial to you in the future.
