  1. Generosity God s Generosity Overcomes Selfishness Focal Verses Amos 6:4-8, 11-14

  2. Aim for Change By the end of the lesson, we will EXPLORE God s response to injustice as recorded by Amos; feel RIGHTEOUS ANGER for ways people practice greed and selfishness, and DISCOVER ways God does justice amid injustice and ways humans can join God in the fight against injustice.

  3. The People, Places, Times Amos was a prophet from Judah (the southern kingdom) but was sent by God to prophesy against Israel (the northern kingdom) during the reign of Jeroboam II (c. 760 750 BC). He was not a professional prophet (Amos 7:14-15) but a shepherd and fig farmer from Tekoa, a small town in Judah (Amos 1:1, 7:14-15).

  4. Background Leading Up to Amos 6:4-8, 11-14: The book of Amos is set during the reign of Jeroboam II (793 753 BC) in Israel (the Northern Kingdom). This was a time of great political stability, economic prosperity but also of moral decay, social injustice, and spiritual corruption. The people enjoyed wealth and luxury, but they oppressed the poor, engaged in idolatry, and practiced empty religious rituals without true devotion to God.

  5. In-Depth A selfish Lifestyle (Amos 6:4-8) Punishment for Self-Indulgent (vv.11-14)

  6. Discussion Questions 1. The Danger of Complacency: Amos condemns the leaders of Israel for their luxurious lifestyles while ignoring the suffering of others (Amos 6:4-6). Question: In what ways can prosperity and comfort lead to spiritual complacency today? How can we guard against this? 2. False Security vs. True Security: The Israelites believed their wealth and power made them secure, yet God declared their downfall (Amos 6:7-8). Question: What are some things people rely on for security today that may ultimately fail them? How does God define true security? 3. Corruption of Justice: Amos says Israel has turned justice into poison and righteousness into bitterness (Amos 6:12). Question: How do we see injustice in today s world, and what is the role of believers in restoring justice?

  7. Topic: Mercy Message: God s Mercy to Do the Right Thing Scripture: Jona h 3:1 10 o Change is often required in life if we want to live in peace with others. What can we do about life situations that threaten us? We can seek God s mercy.
