Lesson 5 - You Can t Judge a Book by its Cover The TLN Identity Pack is a series of six lessons, which have been created to develop dialogue around identity, diversity, uniqueness, community, sense of belonging and equality. It draws upon a poem in the book Skin Again by Bell Hooks, which helps move conversation about skin colour forward for children. The skin I m in is just a covering. It cannot tell my story For we are all inside made up of real history, real dreams and the stuff we all hope for.

Sit in a circle next to people who are not your main friendship group. In pairs, talk about the following: Who gave you your name? Does your name have a meaning? Do you like/dislike your name? Do your friends or family have any nicknames or other names for you? Remember only share what you want to share!

What do I feel has had the biggest impact on my identity and why? Work with a partner you don t know very well to look at and discuss these identity cards. Then both of you need to choose the 3 cards to answer the question: What do I feel has had the biggest impact on my identity and why? Have a go at putting the cards in order of importance to each of you. Do you notice any similarities or differences?
GRACES MIND MAP This is Grace s identity map; we can use this to find out more about her and find out some details about her life such as the groups she belongs to. Have you ever heard of the phrase, You can t judge a book by its cover ? What do you think this phrase means?
GRACES MIND MAP This mind-map is like the inside of a book and it tells us so much more than the outside.
L.O. To create a mind-map about some parts of my identity using words and pictures 1. Look at the identity cards to give you ideas about what you could include on your mind-map. 2. Once you have gathered some ideas together, begin mind-map using small drawings and pictures. 3. Think about how to make each idea stand out. Some ideas to get you started: A picture of a place you like to play, a favourite way to relax, a group you are a part of, something you like to do at school or home, a favourite meal cooked by a grandparent
Share your mind-map with a new partner. See if you can find out something that you didn t know about them.

Do you think you have found out anything new about yourself or anyone else this lesson? Did you let go of any old ideas about each other?
Does it feel different telling people about something you do that only you do? Do you feel shy? Is it easier to share things you know that many people take part in?
Prejudice- judging someone or having an idea about them before you actually know anything about them.
Prejudice related thinking can happen when people don t take the time to consider the real person but just think of someone as a name or label and this can have an impact on people s identity. Calling a person or group of people names because of their identity is prejudice and if it is because of their ethnic identity it is racism.
What effect could prejudiced/racist name calling have on a person s identity?
For homework this week, collect quotes from a few people about their hopes and dreams for the future. You could ask a parent/carer, grandparent, another adult in school, an older or younger sibling, a friend, a relative etc
