What is Job Shadowing? Job shadowing is an experience where you spend a day or a few days observing a professional on the job. While job shadowing, you can easily learn about different jobs and help decide which careers you would enjoy the most. How To Job Shadow Need to get experience? This is the place to start. What is an Internship? An internship is an opportunity offered by an employer to potential employees, called interns, to work at a firm for a fixed period of time. Interns are usually...college or high school students, and most internships last between a month and three months. Internships are usually part-time if offered during a semester and full-time if offered during the vacation periods. An internship should give you practical skills, workplace experience and greater knowledge of that industry, in exchange for the employer benefiting from your labor. Job Shadowing/Internship Search Tips Create or polish your resume Create one using the Google Docs template gallery Research local businesses in the field you are interested in shadowing Google search a specific business or do a general search (i.e., photographers in valparaiso, in ) Contact someone from the company or business via phone or email If you don t have a specific name, ask/find someone in Human Resources (HR) SAMPLE PHONE CALL/EMAIL SCRIPT Prior to the job shadow, generate a list of 5-10 questions SAMPLE QUESTIONS Send a thank you card or email to mentor after the job shadow/internship experience Source: https://www.livecareer.com/resources/jobs/search/job-shadowing-questions
How Can I Score an Job Shadow or Internship?! 1. Ask friends or family members you know in the field(s) you are interested in if their company offers internships, or if you can at least job shadow for an hour or day. 2. Create or update your resume- ask someone at home or school to help you if needed. 3. Cold call companies or businesses, introduce yourself, and ask if they offer internships or job shadowing opportunities. 4.
