  1. Teachers slide The Unifrog competencies and the way students can record these on the platform (Student side>Competencies>Add example). Location Classroom with student access to internet Familiarise yourself Recommended time 45 minutes Provide Devices or paper as required. By the end of the lesson, students should be able to: Explore what makes a good leader. Identify their own leadership experiences. Understand how to record competencies on the Unifrog platform. Objectives Add as an Interaction Click Advanced view>Sort by school leaving year>[filter for specific students]>+interaction. Track on Charts Usage charts>Customise and filter> Competencies logged Students will explore the definition of a leader and the skills involved in being a leader. Students will learn that we can all be leaders in day-to-day life. Students will identify when they have been leaders and will work independently to write a record of this in the Unifrog Competencies tool.   2. Leadership: What makes a great leader?

  3. Leaders (5 mins) Can you remember any current or historical leaders? With the person next to you, brainstorm as many leaders as you can in two minutes! Discuss the following points: Are they good or bad leaders? Why do you think they re good or bad?

  4. What is leadership? (5 mins) Work with the person next to you to write a definition of leadership. Get ready to share with the class!

  5. Who are the leaders in your life? (5 mins) Well done for deciding on what leadership means! Using this definition, who do you think are the leaders in your life? Parents and guardians Youth club leaders Older siblings Teachers Sports captains Coaches

  6. Competencies reminder (5 mins) Can you remember what a competency is? Competencies (or soft skills)are the skills that allow you to go about your day and interact well with others. You are developing your competencies in almost all activities that you do!

  7. What are the 12 Unifrog Competencies? (5 mins) Aiming high Used your imagination to come up with new ideas Creativity Shown strong skills in receiving and processing information or ideas Leadership Used strategies to overcome a setback Listening Shown strong skills in reading Speaking Set a clear goal and devise a plan to achieve it Problem solving Found a solution to a situation or challenge Staying positive Worked cooperatively with others to get something done Teamwork Shown strong skills in orally transmitting information or ideas Reading Worked on your own to achieve something Numeracy Shown particularly strong skills in writing Independence Successfully worked with numbers Writing Motivated others to achieve a shared goal

  8. What makes a great leader? (10 mins) Great leadership involves different styles and competencies. Work in teams to create a poster. Use your poster to describe what an great leader is like! You will want to include: The leader s competencies The relationship the leader has with their group The way the leader helps the group achieve things Get ready to present your poster to the class!

  9. The leader in you (5 mins) Leadership is not just about changing the world or winning gold. You are able to be a leader in your day-to-day life too! Any time you influence people, activities, and the ideas around you, you are being a leader. When have you been a leader? Turn to the person next to you and take turns describing your leadership experiences.

  10. Recording skills on Unifrog (10 mins) Log into Unifrog and find the Competencies tool on the Unifrog homepage. Choose one of your leadership experiences you discussed earlier and record it as a competency. Name the situation in which it happened with a date and your description.

  11. CAR method This method is a way of recording and presenting your competencies. It can be helpful when you re writing them down or speaking about them at interview. C ontext What was the situation or task? A ction What did you do? R esult What was the outcome?

  12. Why do we record competencies? (5 mins) Turn to the person next to you. Use your communication skills to discuss the questions below! 1. Do you need to record the competencies you can demonstrate? Why or why not? 2. Can you think of any scenarios when someone might want to know about your competencies in future?

  13. Leaders (5 mins) Pick your favourite leader from the list you made at the start of the class. You could even choose a new example now that you know all about leadership! Name three skills or competencies this leader has or had Describe in one sentence why these skills were particularly important to them
