PATTERNS (DISCUSSION) What are patterns? Come up with a definition in small groups and we will reconvene to discuss. What are patterns in natural systems? Are they variable? How many dimensions are required to describe them? Are they scaleable? Why do we care about natural patterns? Who sees patterns?

PATTERNS (DISCUSSION) How do we see patterns? How is the concept of ideal or pattern formed? Is it: Deductive: concept is innate to observer. Inductive: one abstracts concept through observation of imperfect examples. When do we stop being able to see patterns? Think about the pattern recognition exercises. How do we overcome human limitations?
COMPUTATIONAL PATTERN RECOGNITION AND PREDICTION How does a computer see patterns? Needs to learn the way we do (Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning). Pattern analysis of natural phenomena requirements: 1. The existence of appropriate mathematical recognition and detection methods; 2. The proper implementation of these methods in hardware and software platforms that include workflows to facilitate pattern analysis; 3. That researchers are well-versed with data types and characteristics, have the requisite knowledge on the general workings of these required methods, and the skills in utilizing the hardware and software platforms.
PREDICTING WITH GEOSPATIAL DATA (DISCUSSION) Can we predict an exact location in which something (landslide, earthquake, etc.) may occur? Why or why not? What is susceptibility ? Mass movement susceptibility Earthquake susceptibility Flooding susceptibility Geoscientists often use susceptibility as a form of prediction.
