Key points to remember Earliest mentioned event- Third Anglo-Afghan war of 1919, and the assumption of the throne by Zahir Shah in 1933 1973 coup - society broke down in Afghanistan, prompting the Russians to invade in 1979. They remained in charge of the country until the collapse of the USSR at the beginning of the 1990s. In the chaos following the withdrawal of the Russian troops, Afghanistan dissolved into civil war with one particular group the Taliban slowly assuming control of much of the country. They were finally overthrown in the conflict that followed the attacks in the USA on 11 September 2001.
