The aim of todays lesson is to answer this question: What made the Edwardian Reformation the floodtide of radicalism (Eamonn Duffy)? Links to: AQA key question 5 How far did intellectual and religious ideas change and develop and with what effects?
Sample essay questions ft. religion The crisis faced by the Tudors in the years 1540-63 was primarily caused by economic factors. Assess the validity of this view. The main cause of rebellions in the years 1536 to 1558was religious disagreements. Assess the validity of this view. Rebellions in the years 1549 to 1571 stemmed from the weakness of central government. Assess the validity of this view.
Sample extracts question Using your understanding of the historical context, assess how convincing the arguments in these three extracts are in relation to religious change in the years after 1547.
Activity 1: analysing the key differences between Catholicism and Protestantism 5 In pairs or on your own, complete the two tasks on your handout
Activity 2: comparing the changes under Somerset and Northumberland 5 Using the Religious Changes Under Edward handout: Relax, ladies, I m celibate in accordance with Article 3 of the Six Articles Act of 1539. 1. Look at the Somerset column. Highlight anything which would WORRY Stephen Gardiner. 2. Highlight anything which would REASSURE him. 3. Now do the same two tasks for the Northumberland column. 4. Summarise what this shows.
Activity 3: the floodtide of radicalism 15 1. On a piece of A3 paper, draw a flood tide ruler (or line) with six levels - one for each year from 1547-1553 2. Using your photocopy of Rogerson pp.212-215, identify the EIGHT most significant religious changes under Edward VI. 3. Add them to your ruler, with a note next to each one explaining how it helped to radicalise religion. Extension activity: using p.215, identify the doctrinal and ceremonial changes in both books of common prayer.
