  2. DO NOW! TODAY MARKS THE 105TH ANNIVERSARY OF ROALD AMUNDSEN'S EXPEDITION TO THE SOUTH POLE. THE FIRST EXPEDITION TO REACH THE GEOGRAPHIC SOUTH POLE WAS LED BY THE NORWEGIAN EXPLORER ROALD AMUNDSEN. HE AND FOUR OTHERS ARRIVED AT THE POLE ON 14 DECEMBER 1911,[N 1]FIVE WEEKS AHEAD OF A BRITISH PARTY LED BY ROBERT FALCON SCOTT AS PART OF THE TERRA NOVA EXPEDITION.

  6. LOOKING CLOSELY AT THE POEM Use these prompts to help you explore the poem & make clear annotations. Verse 1 Explore the descriptions that suggest change is in the air. What does the simile in lines 3 and 4 indicate about the nature of the relationship, and how the father feels about what s happening.

Verse 3 What previous images does the phrase eddying away connect to? What does the word eddying convey? Lines 3 and 4 of this verse are the start of the poet s attempt to express the main idea that he has written the poem what do you think the main idea is?

  8. LOOKING CLOSELY AT THE POEM Verse 4 The writer says he had worse partings . What might it be about this particular parting that he finds so hard to deal with? Look closely at the two concluding lines. Explain what you think the poet is attempting to express about: The meaning and nature of selfhood Love between a parent and child. Think carefully about the use of the verb proved .

LOOKING CLOSELY AT THE POEM On your poem highlight and label examples of the following: A sentence that is interrupted by a new thought A sentence that shows uncertainty A sentence that suggests the writer is struggling to express something A verb that expresses a memory that won t go away, and continues to trouble the writer An adverb that suggests the writer can only express an idea in an approximate way. Remember to explore the effect!

  10. RESPONDING TO THE POEM The poem clearly details the strength of a parent-child relationship. Think of a strong relationship you have (could be a parent/guardian/friend/pet) choose from the following: Write a poem in response about your own relationship. Create a playlist based around the relationship Draw a serious of photographs which show the strong bond you have.
