Lesson 3: Poetry In the previous lesson, I learned a lot about prose fiction. Now, I am excited to get to know another genre of literature which is poetry? Will the elements help me understand and appreciate it as well?
Lesson 3: Poetry Poetry is a literary genre that is known for its beauty. It is distinct from the others because it is meant to be measured and more structured. It also uses imagery and figurative language to express ideas. Not a lot of people understand and appreciate poetry, but knowing its elements will help you deal with poetry and unveil its wonders. These are the basic elements of poetry. 1. Persona is a personality that is speaking in the poem. In poetry, a persona can be described using a person as a symbol or using words that fit the personality of the person based on the meaning of the poem. 2. Addressee is the assumed receiver of the message of the poem through the determined meaning of the poem. Just like the persona, the addressee can also be a direct person or can be described. Example: The addressee in the poem What are Heavy? may be the readers in general who may reflect about life and the ideas presented in the poem. Example: The persona in the poem What are Heavy? may be a person who has a deep understanding of life.
Lesson 3: Poetry 3. Line is the group of words that occupy each line where the poem is written. This is also used to describe the stanza. 4. Stanza is a dividing and organizing technique that places a group of lines in a poem together, separated from other groups of lines by line spacing or indentation. It is important to identify this because it helps determine the idea development of the poem. Example: The poem What are Heavy? Has four lines. Example: In the poem What are Heavy?, there is only one stanza. 5. Rhymes are words whose endings match, as in fly and spy. Letters are usually used to present the rhyme pattern or the rhyme scheme of a poem. Examples: What are heavy? Sea-sand and sorrow; a What are brief? Today and tomorrow; a What are frail? Spring blossoms and youth; b What are brief? The ocean and truth. b
