Setting Elizabethan poetry, (also known as the Renaissance Poetry), as the name suggests, comprises the poetry written during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I of England. The Elizabethan age dates back to the period from1558 to 1603. It is called the Golden Age in the history of English Literature. Poetry had a great progression in terms of form and theme.

Source & Characteristics Source: This new approach to things found its genesis in the Italian Renaissance and was also much influenced by the development of intellectual thought in France ,Spain and other European nations. Characteristics: 1- vigorous intellectual thinking. 2- an age of adventure and discovery. 3- a time in which new ideas and new experiences were sought after. 4- revolutionized many aspects of English life, most significantly literature. 5-It was a time of discovery, when sailors journeyed far and wide and were introduced to many new cultures and civilizations. 6-All this impacted on the way people thought.The world,as it were,had been 'opened up' to them.

Impact on Literature These influences had a marked effect on English literature and many new styles of writing were introduced. New Styles: 1.The Era of Sonnets(Poetry) Sonnet is an icon for the Elizabethan poetry as the majority of writers adopted and adapted this newly borrowed style of poetry. This was the period in which the sonnet was popularized after its introduction by ThomasWyatt early in the 16th century. Wyatt had brought to attention the beauty and artfulness of the Petrarchan sonnet(Italian). Shakespeare made significant changes to the Italian model and introduced his own style, now known as the English (or Shakespearean) sonnet.(168 sonnets).
