Introduce myself and my background. Introduce the city of Leeds as the location for my current research. In this short presentation I will Explain my PhD research, methods and themes. Discuss Leeds Club History Project (LCHP) as an output of my PhD.
All about me Senior Lecturer for 21 years. Huge music fan. I was quite late going to university. Prior to education worked in hotels, events, technology and telecoms. Five books currently published around the entertainment industries, employability and life itself. Numerous book chapters, journal articles and conference papers mostly around the subjects of entertainment industries and employability. Very late deciding to do a PhD, which I m currently in the final year of writing up. Film-maker, traveller, home brewer and serial creative. http://www.stuartmoss.co.uk
Leeds Third largest city in the UK, largest city in the county of West Yorkshire. The city of Leeds has a population of over 800,000 people, Leeds city region has a population of over 3 million. VERY multicultural city. Ex-industrial city (textiles, coal, chemicals). Now a centre for services including financial services. Five higher education institutions (HEIs), numerous smaller colleges (over 80,000 16+ year olds in education in the city). Direct inter-city rail links to London, Edinburgh, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, Hull, although largest city in Europe not to have a tram or light-rail metro system. Has its own international airport - Leeds Bradford Airport. Motorway links north and south (M1) / east and west (M62). Popular culture: first moving images filmed in the city by Louis Le Prince; Leeds United; Leeds Rhinos; Leeds Festival; Leeds West Indian Carnival; Kaiser Chiefs; Utah Saints; Sisters of Mercy; great reputation for nightlife.
My PhD "You can't spell Leeds without LSD and a couple of Es": The story of the promotion and development of 'club' venues as leisure spaces in Leeds, UK 1990 2020. Largely picks up when the unlicensed outdoor rave scene was made illegal by the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 forcing promoters to seek official indoor venues. Although provides historic underpinning from throughout the 20thCentury. Narrative analysis from interviews with independent club event promoters. Content analysis of news articles, social media and event promotional materials. Auto-ethnography of my own memories and experiences in Leeds from the perspective of an event attendee, event promoter and event security.
My PhD Exploring themes relating to: Business particularly micro and macro environmental forces, which have shaped and influenced the development of nightlife in Leeds. Competitor mapping; STEEPLE; Porter s five forces; Schumpeter s creative destruction. Marketing and promotion the development of event brands event promotion media including phonelines, pirate radio, paper flyers, fanzines, posters, internet and social media. Enterprise and serious leisure the journey from bedroom DJ to event promoter and beyond, the seeding and creation of music scenes in nightlife venues in Leeds. Youth cultures, leisure spaces, safe spaces for marginalised communities, class, dancing, fashions, rules, normative behaviour and drugs lots of drugs. The rise to prominence of electronic dance music in Leeds from the early 1980s to present day and the legacy of this. The evolution of venues for dancing in Leeds in the 20thand 21stCenturies from ballrooms dancehalls discos nightclubs unlicensed rave venues - clubs licensed industrial venues house parties the new rave scene.
