The Literature in Africa begin with Oral Tradition- Telling stories-singing songs-oldest form of Literary activity. Written Literary Activity arrival of Europeans- printing press-translation of Bible and other religious books. Chinua Achebe-best-known novelist-Nigeria-born- Ogidi-Onithsha-Interpreter of the society Important works-Short stories,First three novels- Things Fall Apart(1958)No Longer At Ease(1960)and Arrow of God(1964)
Things Fall Apart is divided into Three parts-Twenty Five Chapters. The first part describes-rise of the protagonist- Okonkwo-won many titles The second part describes primarily Okonkwo s life in Mabanta-during his exile. Okonkwo s disappointments with intrusion of colonialism The beauty of the Igbo culture is blended together and portrayed effectively.
Gaining Titles-and Marrying many wives-proves the Masculinity of men. Igbo people has so many religious beliefs- Imporantdecisions-Clan Leaders Men with Loathsome disease-thrown into the evil forest.EX-Unoka-Okonkwo s father. Twins are abandoned in the same way. Egwugwu-ancestral spirits. Personal god-chi-controls one s destiny
Oracles of AGBALA-Igbo people cosults agbala when the misfortunes dogged them. Royal python-most revered animal Superstitious beliefs darkness held vague terror-ibodo not want the girl child to eat eggs-when a man commits suicide his own people did not touch his body-Okonkwo Festivals-New yam festival-three days-grandoise celebrations Locust-allegorically compared to-white settlers
Social customs such as marriage ceremonies-funeral arrangements gaining titles,usageof proverbs- Proverbs are the palm oil with which words are eaten, The novel highlights the beautiful artifacts of: Folk tales-story of Tortoise,Earth and the Sky etc are notable. Folk songs-Rain songs,Work songs,Bridal song,Dirge song etc are notable. The ritual of Kola nut is one of the hospitality among Ibo.
Thus Achebe gives Kaleidoscopic view of the beauty of the Igbo culture .
