Expressing Meaning Through Pantomime
Pantomime, rooted in the Greek word "mimos", involves dramatic communication using gestures, facial expressions, and movement without words. It requires practice to convey conflict, suspense, and emotion effectively. Observation helps in creating accurate performances. To excel, avoid verbal introductions, stay in character, and exaggerate gestures. Begin practicing by expressing ideas silently.

Pantomime From the Greek word mimos which means to imitate or mimic.
Pantomime It is dramatic communication performed entirely without words. Mimes rely on GESTURE, FACIAL EXPRESSION, and MOVEMENT to represent action and express meaning. Body language or nonverbal communication can reflect thoughts and feelings.
Pantomime All pantomimes should contain CONFLICT and SUSPENSE Much PRACTICE is needed for a good pantomimed performance! Pantomime is very useful in many theatre situations. A stick can become a fishing pole, bat, fly swatter, cane, antenna, etc.
Observation and Pantomime The best way to perform an accurate pantomime is to observe other people go through a similar situation. Ask the following: Is there a conflict? What expressions are on the person s face? What happens with the person s body?
To create a good pantomime: Do not use a verbal introduction! You should NEVER speak! Remain in character the entire time Do not use sound effects Exaggerate your gestures slightly
Practice! Think of a way you can express to a partner the following ideas without saying a word: Everything is okay. Please, help me out here. Don t say another word. I haven t a clue.
