COVERING TWO CYCLES: PREPARE AND WRITE Receive invitation to join a consortium Cycle 2 write Work package structure and their leadership Concept and state of the art Negotiate project group & set up Launch grant writing Pursue alternative path (not grant application) Grant application submitted Bringing it all together WP detail design Identify potential funding sources Develop research ideas KPIs and impact Budget and project plan Cycle 1 prepare Identify potential partners 2

  3. INPUTS: WHAT SUPPORT MIGHT BE (MOST) VALUED? 1. 2. Information sessions: how to Share examples (demystify; templates) 3. Time for focused effort 4. 5. Sounding board for ideas Feedback on drafts For projects led by participants, and where participant plays a small (or leading) part in a consortium 6. 7. Mentoring Peer support: community (and competition) 8. 9. Help with finding potential sources of funding and potential partners Support with negotiations and decision making (inc responding to invitations to join a consortium) 10. Funding to cover administrative, research and writing advice costs directly associated with launching and writing an application 3

  4. WHAT? (concept) A group of BMS peers learning and working together to develop and submit grant applications Highly collegial HOW? (Design) Programme of short talks, workshops and meetings (goal setting, drafting) SM group (whatsapp?) Linked to mentors? WHEN? Start in Q4 Run for 18-24 months WHY? To facilitate grant writing Scale up rate of submissions, and quality For career development More and better research at BMS WHO? (Guests) Mostly internal speakers, such as grant advisors, successful applicants, those with reviewing experience, and those with policy perspective WHO? (lead) See note on team in later slide Needs active FB and Dept head support Involve one of the participants WHO? (target) Less experienced faculty, as the priority Anyone who struggles to find motivation/time to write grants x GRANT WRITING CLUB HOW MUCH? 5 short sessions per teaching quarter Plus one retreat per quarter (1/2 or 1 day) DRAFT CONCEPT HOW? (management) Coordinated and supported centrally Co-produced / community centred Club ethos 4

OUTPUTS AND OUTCOMES What would success look like? of those who start stay with the group Collegial genuine support from within of those who stay participate in a grant application before programme ends All who stay agree their skills have developed Positive views of dept/section heads re the support provided (reduced need for local mentoring), and quantity and quality of submissions rises Demand for more! Personal growth and cultural change Participants develop research vision and personal plans, and their career narrative Support is provided for those who do want to apply for grants Support also provided for those interested in alternatives Participation in GWC is fully integrated into personal development arrangements, and receives active support from dept and section chairs Maximising impact Systematically link to BMS research support resources Actively promote networking within the group Connect and engage group members with experienced grant winners Record talks etc to build the BMS resource base Link to BMS research themes Nested mentoring arrangement, to facilitate continuity 5
