Provosts office will determine whether or not each applicant is eligible for advancement in rank Time in rank 3 years full-time at current rank is necessary to APPLY for advancement to Assistant Professor; 5 years full-time to APPLY for advancement to Associate Professor or Professor Any special arrangements?   5. By September 1 Email formal written request for advancement to the Dean of your school with a copy of the written request to the Vice Provost of Faculty Affairs. Complete your Rank & Promotion Portfolio in Watermark Faculty Success (use Rank and Promotion New ) Ensure that your portfolio is complete If it isn t, the committee will remove your application from consideration in this round of promotions 6/15/2025 5

By September 15 Dean reviews completed Watermark portfolio, writes a complete evaluation of the candidate in all areas teaching, scholarship, service and, if applicable, administrative duties. o The evaluation is entered into Watermark system o Commendations and concerns should be clearly stated in the evaluation of the candidate. 6/15/2025 7

  8. By October 15 oRank and Promotion Committee completes review of requests for advancement at CUW. And o Peer Review Committee completes review of requests for advancement at CUAA. 6/15/2025 8

  9. By November 1 o Committee recommendations are forwarded in writing to the Vice Provost of Faculty Affairs, then applicant is notified of decision by the committee chair. o Negative decisions will include reasons. oVice Provost of Faculty Affairs notifies President s Office 6/15/2025 9

After December 1 President presents final recommendations to Board of Regents at their first scheduled regular meeting after December 1. o The Board acts on the recommendations made oThe President s Office notifies Vice Provost of Faculty Affairs of the Board s action and the Vice Provost notifies all applicants of the Board s action 6/15/2025 10

  13. From the 2023 faculty handbook: Faculty seeking advancement in rank must compile a portfolio that documents their accomplishments and provides evidence to support their request. Faculty are provided with some leeway in portfolio addenda, but must follow the guidelines below for the main documentation (portfolio and required supplemental information) to be evaluated by the committee Format requirements: 12-point font, line spacing 1.5, 1-inch margins

Include two artifacts from the following list: a) All student course experience surveys from past 3 years with summary b) Peer review of teaching from someone within discipline c) Peer review of teaching from someone outside discipline d) Expert review of course syllabi and content e) Evidence of improvement of teaching from professional development f) Other evidence as appropriate to the discipline 3.   17. From the faculty handbook: The faculty member bears final responsibility for the completeness of the portfolio. Once the portfolio is complete, the faculty member should run their report to verify that everything has loaded correctly and all items are present and easy to locate. Failure to submit a complete portfolio following the guidelines above will result in removal of the faculty member from consideration for promotion in this cycle.

  18. Advancement to Assistant Professor To request advancement to the rank of Assistant Professor, the candidate shall: o have served successfully at the rank of Instructor for a minimum of 3 full academic years, at least 2 of which shall be at CUWAA, or possess an earned doctorate or other approved terminal degree; and o have been recommended on the basis of the evaluation process described in the faculty handbook. 6/15/2025 18

Advancement to Assistant Professor Is awarded on the basis of: o Demonstrated teaching effectiveness; o A beginning record of scholarship that contributes to knowledge within the discipline; o Evidence of service to the university, church, profession or community; and o Evidence of administrative effectiveness (administrative faculty only). 6/15/2025 19

Advancement to Associate Professor To request advancement to the rank of Associate Professor, the candidate shall: o have served successfully at the rank of Assistant Professor for a minimum of 5 full academic years, at least 2 of which shall be at CUWAA; o possess an earned doctorate or other approved terminal degree and; o have been recommended on the basis of the evaluation process described in the faculty handbook 6/15/2025 20

Advancement to Associate Professor Advancement to Associate Professor Is awarded on the basis of: o Demonstrated teaching excellence; o An emerging record of scholarship that contributes to knowledge within the discipline; o Evidence of active service to the university, church, profession and/or community; and o Evidence of administrative excellence (administrative faculty only). 6/15/2025 21

Advancement to Professor To request advancement to the rank of Professor, the candidate shall: o have served successfully at the rank of Associate Professor for a minimum of 5 full academic years, at least 2 of which shall be at CUWAA; o possess an earned doctorate or other approved terminal degree; and o have been recommended on the basis of the evaluation process described in the faculty handbook. 6/15/2025 22

Advancement to Professor Is awarded on the basis of: o A consistent record of distinguished scholarly teaching; o An established record of scholarship that contributes to knowledge within the discipline; o Evidence of leadership and service to the university, and of active service to the profession, church and/or community; and o A consistent record of administrative excellence (administrative faculty only). 6/15/2025 23

Appeal Process Appeal Process If an applicant has met the basic requirements for advancement but has not been recommended by the Rank and Promotion Committee (CUW) or Peer Review Committee (CUAA), the faculty member may appeal the committee s decision in writing. oNo later than December 1 6/15/2025 29

Appeal Process Appeal Process oThe written appeal shall clearly explain why the faculty member believes the committee s decision is incorrect. o The faculty member may only cite evidence presented in their rank and promotion portfolio. oThe appeal shall be sent to the Vice Provost of Faculty Affairs (VPFA) o VPFA meets with chair of Rank and Promotion Committee (CUW) or Peer Review Committee (CUAA) to clarify committee s rationale for decision. 6/15/2025 30

  31. Appeal Process Appeal Process oVPFA meets with the appellant and recommends further action (whether to proceed or to cease the appeals process and reapply for advancement the next year) o If the faculty member chooses to continue the appeal, VPFA presents the faculty member s written appeal, along with a written recommendation from the VPFA, to the Provost, who determines whether to uphold or overturn the committee s decision. (This year the VPFA and Provost are the same person so the President will be the decider). 6/15/2025 31

  32. Appeal Process Appeal Process The Provost may, at his or her sole discretion, meet with the faculty member and/or committee chair to seek additional clarification prior to making that decision. If the Provost decides to uphold the committee s decision, she or he forwards a written explanation to the appellant. If the Provost decides to overturn the committee s decision, he or she will forward a written explanation to the committee chair. If the Provost supports the appeal, the recommendation for advancement will be forwarded to the Board of Regents along with the other candidates recommended for promotion, and the appellant will be informed of the Board of Regents decision after the Board has met. 6/15/2025 32
