ROBERT CHESTER (1985) The Rise of the Neo-Conventional Family
Do we actually live in a period of family diversity? Most adults still marry and have children. Most children are reared by their natural parents. Most people live in a household headed by a married couple. Most marriages continue until parted by death. No great changes seem currently in prospect . CHESTER
The majority of people live in traditional family units Life cycles, however, often result in people not living in traditional family units There have been clear changes for women in paid employment Therefore, the neo-conventional family is the norm CHESTER
Yes No Gittins: there is no such thing as the family, only families Chester and the neo- conventional family Post-modernists would suggest that diversity in the family reflects a shift to living in a post- modern society (choice and diversity) New Right would agree that we live in a period of diversity. This, however, is a threat to value consensus and social order. DO WE LIVE IN A PERIOD OF FAMILY DIVERSITY?
