Family is Family initiative The Family is family campaign began in November 2020. We started it, because we believe That the most important thing for a child is to grow up surrounded by love. That the definition of family is more colourful than we would sometimes think. That all families with children deserve equal rights, opportunities and support. That family is family, even if parents happen to be of the same sex. The only important thing is that they are people.
Family is Family initiative The Family is Family campaign is a true civilian initiative: it was created with the collaboration of three families with children and volunteers who support our cause. All of our projects have come to life this way. We strive to reach equal rights, equal support and equal opportunities for all families with children. Our aim is to spread awareness and to be able to have a calm conversation about the situation of rainbow families while paying attention to one another s arguments, and basing the conversation on facts and well-supported research. We are proud that the Family is family campaign was supported by more than 150 companies, brands, embassies, and more than a hundred well-known people and tens of thousands of civilians. We received support from Bence Istenes, N ra rd g, Enik Mihalik and P ter Gul csi. International or local big companies like Ikea, RTL Magyarorsz g, Sziget, Levi s, HBO, Netpinc r and Cinema City have expressed their support too. We re very proud that many small- and medium-sized enterprises support us. Ten embassies (United States of America, United Kingdom, Germany and Spain, among others) stood up to support us.

Marriage equality in Hungary Since 2009, same-sex couples in Hungary can enter into registered partnerships. These are legally similar to marriage in many ways: partners inherit from each other, share property if they separate, and are entitled to the same tax, social, labor, and immigration benefits as married couples. However, key differences remain: Only same-sex couples can form registered partnerships They cannot adopt together, even each other s children (even if the child was born during the registered partnership) They cannot take each other s names They cannot access fertility treatments A non-biological parent has no legal parental status, even if they raise the child These legal gaps especially affect rainbow families with children. Only one parent is legally recognized, which can complicate everyday tasks like school enrollment, medical decisions, or travel (they cannot leave the country with one of their parents). These families lack rights that are taken for granted in others like both parents being able to care for their child in a hospital or ensure inheritance and child support. Equal marriage brief
Goal Move the issue of equal marriage forward in Hungary. Increase public support for marriage equality by reigniting the social conversation around it and giving people the tools to keep that dialogue going.
The Challenge Despite registered partnership being in place, true equality is still out of reach. Many people don't yet see why equal marriage matters or why it matters now. We need to close the empathy gap and spark understanding where there s indifference.
Target audience We re speaking to those who are open but uncertain people who don t currently support equal marriage, not out of strong opposition, but because they haven t had the chance to fully understand it. They tend to stick to what s familiar, aligning with mainstream views simply because it feels easier or more comfortable. For many, it s not resistance it s a lack of exposure. They haven t had meaningful personal experiences with rainbow families or seen firsthand how unequal laws create real problems. Without that emotional connection, it s hard for them to grasp why this issue matters or why it matters now. That s why we re not focusing on the most resistant, dismissive groups. Our energy is best spent where hearts and minds can still be moved.
Insight Support for same-sex marriage in Hungary is approaching 50%* a quiet but growing shift. But people are stuck on the question: Isn t a registered partnership enough? Many don t oppose equal marriage they just haven t felt why it matters yet. They ve accepted the status quo not out of conviction, but because they've rarely seen the cost of this situation. Key message Real families face real consequences without equal marriage. We owe them more than symbolic recognition we owe them legal protection.
