Precepting Performance Improvement Program A pilot program of the American Board of Family Medicine
Preceptor Expansion Action Plan Work with CMS to revise student documentation guidelines Integrate interprofessional/interdisciplinary education into ambulatory primary care settings Develop standardized onboarding process for students and preceptors & Integrate students into the work of ambulatory primary care settings in useful and authentic ways Develop educational collaboratives across departments, specialties, professions, and institutions to improve administrative efficiencies for preceptors Promote productivity incentive plans that include teaching & develop a culture of teaching in clinical settings

ABFM Precepting Program Method for teaching physicians to meet Performance Improvement (PI) requirement Meets ABFM s initiative to recognize improvement projects based on identified gaps in quality in the workplace
ABFM Precepting Program For organizations medical schools, residency programs, and other applicable organizations who engage teaching physicians in continuous improvement
Expectations for Pilot Sponsors Complete a brief questionnaire about your academic unit Participate in quarterly web conferences Monitor and report completion of ABFM Diplomates Complete a final survey at the end of the pilot
Organizational Requirements Auditable record-keeping Portfolio manager Track physician participation and notify ABFM of completion
PI Requirements Defined project aim and intervention(s) At least one improvement cycle Baseline measurement. May include: Self-evaluation of teaching skills performed by the teaching physician Assessment of the teaching physician by the Sponsor Post-intervention data. May include: Follow-up assessment from learner(s) and self- evaluation/reflection by the teaching physician Follow-up assessment of the physician by the Sponsor Comply with the ABFM Industry Support Policy
Meaningful Participation Requirements Teaching physician must : Complete an attestation appropriate to the teaching physician s work setting Complete at least 180 1:1 contact teaching hours Participate in implementing the intervention(s) Review project data including the pre-and post-data from the learner in accordance with the Sponsor s project plan Demonstrate active collaboration in the implementation of the project
ABFM Precepting Program Why a Pilot? To limit possible issues, allowing for quick resolution To identify opportunities to optimize processes To gather information to assist future participating organizations To learn, improve, learn, improve within a controlled environment
Selection Criteria for Pilot Looking for a diversity in academic units Geography Type of academic unit Structure Length and type of clerkship (for medical schools/Departments of family medicine)
Timeline for Pilot 2/1/18 Call for Applications opens 2/15/18 Q&A Webinar for potential applicants (optional) 2/28/18 Deadline for applications 3/21/18 Pilot sites announced/Pilot begins 3/27/18 Webinar for sponsoring institutions 4/2/18 Pilot begins 6/6/18 Sponsoring institutions submit outlines of PI projects 7/11/18 Videoconference for pilot sponsoring institutions 10/10/18 Videoconference for pilot sponsoring institutions 11/8/18 Sponsoring institutions submit any additional PI projects/interventions 1/20/19 Final report due
