THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION
Russia is one of the largest countries in the world. It occupies about one-seventh part of dry land. It is situated in Europe and Asia. Its total area is over 17 million square kilometers.
The population of Russia is about 150 million people. 83 per cent of the population are Russians. 70 per cent of the population live in cities.
Moscow is the capital of our country. It was founded in 1147. It is a wonderful city. There are many sights in Moscow. You can see many museums, art galleries, theatres, churches and monuments in our capital. People of our country are proud of the Moscow Kremlin. There are also many other big beautiful cities in Russia.
MOSCOW Moscow is the capital of Russia. It is one of the biggest and most beautiful cities in the world. Moscow is the modern city now. The population of the city is about 9.8 million people. Moscow is a political centre, where the government of our country works. Moscow was founded in 1147 by Yuri Dolgoruky. The total area of Moscow is about nine hundred square kilometres.
CLIMATE Russia's climate is markedly continental, with cold winters and mild or warm summers, depending on latitude. There are various types of climate in the territory of Russia. The country's vegetation reflects its different latitudinal climatic regimes.
RESOURCES Russia is among the worlds richest countries in mineral resources. It is the the biggest producer of coal, petroleum, and natural gas, as wel as iron, ore, copper, zinc, lead, nickel, aluminium and tin.
EASTER It is the main Orthodox festival. Children colour eggs and enjoy traditional Russian dishes. Churches hold special services on this day.
INTERNATIONAL WOMEN S DAY This is a day off. Probably the busiest people on this day are flowers-sellers. Men and young boys try to please their mothers, sisters and friends by giving them presents, flowers and chocolates.
MASLENITSA This festival marks the end of winter and the beginning of spring and lent. During this festival people make pancakes, sing traditional songs, and dance traditional dances or go visiting each other.
NEW YEAR HOLIDAY This is a day when gifts are given by Ded Moroz, decorating New Year trees and joyful parties.
RUSSIA DAY We celebrate the day when Russia became an independent country, the Republic of Russian Federation after the break up of the Soviet Union in 1991. This is an official holiday.
THE MOTHERLAND DEFENDERS DAY This holiday is devoted to soldiers and officers and everyone else who ever defended the country or is in the Army. These people are sent special cards and given presents. Concerts are also given in their honour.
