  1. Acts Part 1 Lesson 1

  2. Acts 1 Acts 1:1-2 and Luke 1:1-4 Both books were written by Luke and both were written to a man named Theophilus Book of Luke was the first, about Jesus Acts is the second about what happened AFTER Jesus ascension Col. 4:14 Luke was the beloved physician and was with Paul when he wrote Colossians 2 Tim. 4:11 Luke was with Paul as he wrote this final letter. A physician who could not help Paul Philemon 24 Luke was a fellow worker with Paul

  3. Acts 1:1-6 Jesus had by the Holy Spirit given orders to the chosen apostles He presented Himself alive AFTER His suffering Gave them many convincing proofs (of what?) Proofs of WHO He was and His resurrection Appeared to them over a period of 40 days Spoke of things concerning the kingdom of God When they were all together, He commanded them: Not to leave Jerusalem, Wait for the Father s promise which 1) they had heard from Him and 2) the promise of baptism with the Holy Spirit not many days from now

  4. Kingdom Cross References Is this the time You will restore the kingdom to Israel? Not for you to know the times and epochs for now Luke 22:28-30 The Father has granted Jesus a kingdom where they will eat at His table, sit on thrones, and judge the 12 tribes of Israel Would Judas have heard this promise? Matt. 25:31 The Son of Man will sit on His glorious throne when He returns at His 2ndcoming He is the King of this everlasting kingdom

  5. Promise to the Apostles WILL receive power The Holy Spirit WILL come upon you You WILL be My witnesses In Jerusalem In All Judea and Samaria In the remotest part of the earth Last words Jesus said, then He was lifted up, a cloud received Him, and He was out of their sight for the first time in 40 days He is out of OUR sight They stood there, looking up expectantly It s been over 2,000 years .am I expectant?

  6. Holy Spirit Luke 24:44-53/Acts 1:4-8 ON the day of Jesus resurrection, He appeared to the disciples and told them about the Holy Spirit. Promised they would be clothed with His power Luke 3:15-17/Acts 1:5 John the Baptist spoke of the baptism of the Holy Spirit with fire. Baptized: baptizo to immerse, submerge, to overwhelm. Zod: occurs as a specific phrase indicating what happened at Pentecost joining the Jews who believed, to the body of Christ. It is Christ s attachment of those who genuinely believe as members of His body. Tense? Voice?

  7. Holy Spirit John 7:37-39 All who believe in Jesus receive His Spirit, but He wasn t given until AFTER Jesus was glorified at His ascension John 14, 15 and 16 Jesus said He would go away and the Spirit would come Another Helper sent from the Father in Jesus name With them forever and IN them Spirit of truth and will guide us into all truth Teach them ALL things Bring to remembrance ALL Jesus had said Testify about Jesus and glorify Him Not come until Jesus goes back to the Father

  8. Power, Witnesses and Promise Acts 1:8 The Holy Spirit Empowers believers to be Jesus witnesses Began in Jerusalem and spread to the remotest part of the earth We are STILL empowered by Holy Spirit to be His witnesses Power: dunamis able, capable, might, strength, marvelous works. For the believer: power to achieve by applying the Lord s inherent abilities. Witnesses: martus one who testifies, one who declares facts directly known to himself. One who has information or knowledge of something and can impart that knowledge.

  9. Cross References Luke 24:45-49 Jesus opened the disciples minds to understand the Scriptures and told them about repentance for forgiveness proclaimed to all nations Is. 49:6 Prophecy of Jesus being the one to restore Israel and be a light to the nations Matt. 28:16-20 Make disciples of Me Rev. 5:6-10 The Lamb who was slain, and purchased with His blood , men from every tribe, nation and tongue to make them to be a kingdom of priests and to reign upon the earth Without Him, we eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow we die

  10. Acts 1:9-11 As the 11 watched, Jesus was lifted up, and received into heaven by a cloud, out of their sight and ours Two men reassured the 11 saying Jesus would come back in the same way Luke 21:27 Son of Man will come in a cloud with power and great glory Mark 14:60-62 He is seated at the right hand of power and He ll come with the clouds of heaven John 14:2-3 He went to prepare a place for us Eph. 1:20-24 He is now seated far above all other rule, authority, power and dominion Rom. 8:34 He intercedes for all believers from heaven

  11. Acts 1:12-14 Apostles return to Jerusalem, a Sabbath day s walk 3,000-3,600 feet in Jesus time: of a mile Ex. 16:29 Remain every man in his place on the 7th day. Luke 6:12-16 After praying all night, Jesus chose the 12 (including Judas!) John 7:2-5 His brothers did not believe and wanted Him to go into Judea where they sought to kill Him Luke 8:19-21 My mother and My brothers are these who hear the Word of God and do it. The apostles are in the upper room in one accord, continually devoted to prayer, as Jesus had been

  12. Peter Peter stands up, gives the story of Judas and his fate and what needs to happen now He seems to be their spokesman. This man who Christ spoke to in Luke 22:31-32 Simon, Simon, behold Satan has demanded to sift you like wheat; but I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail; and you, when once you have turned again, strengthen your brothers. Same chapter that tells of Peter denying Christ three times. Peter the fisherman who caught more fish than his boat could hold Luke 5 Peter the one who WANTED to walk on water

  13. Requirements of an apostle Accompanied them the whole time Jesus went in and out among them Begins with John s baptism until Jesus ascension A witness of His resurrection Lots were cast and Matthias was chosen Prov. 16:33 The lot is decided by the Lord Luke 22 and Rev. 21 There were 12 tribes of Israel, 12 apostles chosen by the Lord, 12 gates and 12 foundation stones in the New Jerusalem, 12 angels for each gate. Paul was not one. Luke was not one.

  14. Application Judas missed out because he CHOSE to depart He missed out on: The resurrection Holy Spirit Eternal life in heaven Apostleship/foundation stone in heavenly Jerusalem Judging the 12 tribes of Israel What have I missed out on because I chose MY way instead of God s? Did I quit instead of persevere? What does He have for me to do for Him?
