Serbian belongs to the Slavic group of languages of the Indo-European language family. The Serbian language is official in Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro and is spoken by about 12 million people. It is also a minority language in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. The Serbian language is characterized by bilingualism: Serbian Cyrillic (fundamental, priority Serbian alphabet, the so-called Serbian spiritual vertical) and Serbian Latin (in the sense: an alphabet that Serbs should know because of the past and because of the present, and the reformers of that Latin were Vuk Karadzic and Djura Danicic).
English is a West Germanic language that originates from England, and is also used as a mother tongue in other countries of the United Kingdom - Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, in the Republic of Ireland, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and many other countries. English is currently the fourth most widely spoken mother tongue in the world (after Chinese, Spanish and Hindu), with some 380 million speakers.
German is one of the languages of the western group of Germanic languages and is one of the world's largest languages. It is the mother tongue of the largest population of the European Union. German is the mother tongue of about one hundred million people in Europe (data from 2004), the mother tongue is 13.3% of Europeans, which makes it the language used by most speakers in Europe without Russia , more than French (66.5 million speakers in 2004) and English (64.2 million speakers in 2004). German is the third language by the number of those who learn it in schools, the second by the number of those who learn it in Europe, and the third in the USA (after Spanish and French).
French is one of the Romance languages primarily used in France, Belgium, Switzerland, the overseas territories of France, as well as the former colonies of France and Belgium, including Quebec in Canada. French is the official language in 29 countries, most of which are members of La Francophonie, a community of French-speaking countries. It is the spoken language in France, southern Belgium, western Switzerland, Monaco, the provinces of Quebec, New Brunswick, and parts of Manitoba and Ontario in Canada, parts of the United States in Louisiana, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont, among the educated classes in North and West Africa, Haiti, French Polynesia and various communities elsewhere.
Russian is the official language of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, and in the past it was the language of international communication in the USSR. A number of those who know Russian are in Eastern Europe, where Russian was a compulsory subject in schools until recently. According to the Cambridge Encyclopedia of Languages, over 455 million people speak Russian as a first or second language. According to the journal Language Monthly (for 1997), about 285 million people in the world speak Russian, making it the 4th most widely spoken language.
Spanish or Castilian (idiom castellano or castellano - "castellano") is an Iberian Romance language, and is the fourth widely spoken language in the world.
