3 Introduction There has been an exponential rise in the number of obese individuals especially in developed nations like United States and United Kingdom. Now obesity has become a public health problem in most nations. Obesity is linked to several long term health conditions, premature death and illness including diabetes, heart disease, stroke, gall bladder disease, fatty liver, arthritis and joint disorders and some cancers.
4 Obesity Obesity = excessively high amount of body fat or adipose tissue in relation to lean tissue, with Body Mass Index (BMI) greater than 30
5 Definition of Body Mass index Body Mass Index (BMI) is a person's weight in kilograms (or pounds) divided by the square of height in meters (or feet). A high BMI can indicate high body fatness. high BMI screens for weight categories that may lead to health problems, but it does not diagnose the body fatness or health of an individual.

Fast food is associated with Obesity ! Gene expression and changes in adipose tissue cellularity showed that an increase in IGF-1 transcription indicated higher proliferation of pre-adipocyte in females fed with junk food diet after weaning compared to males Fast foods reduce the quality of diet and provide unhealthy choices especially among children and adolescents raising their risk of obesity. 7
Impact of fast food on blood sugar level 8 Most fast food, including drinks and sodas, are loaded with carbohydrates with little to no fiber. pancreas responds to the surge in glucose by releasing insulin. frequent eating of fast food with high amounts of carbs can lead to repeated spikes in blood sugar. This increases the risk for insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and weight gain.
9 Effect on respiratory system Excess calories from fast-food meals can cause weight gain and obesity. Obesity causes mechanical compression of the diaphragm, lungs, and chest cavity, which can lead to restrictive pulmonary damage. Furthermore, excess fat decreases total respiratory system compliance, increases pulmonary resistance, and reduces respiratory muscle strength
10 Effect on Nervous system Fast food may satisfy hunger in the short term, but long-term results are less positive. People who eat fast food and processed pastries are 51 percent more likely to develop depression than people who don t eat those foods or eat very few of them.
11 Conclusion Obese people has an increased risk of being diseased with a number of diseases and facing a health related problems regarding their weights. Prevention of obesity would not only prevent disease but also improves the quality of life.
