  1. The Federal University of Technology, Akure, Nigeria One of the specialized University in Nigeria founded in 1982. Comprises of six academic schools and a PG school 1. School of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology 2. School of Engineering and Engineering Technology 3. School of Environmental Technology 4. School of Management Technology 5. School of Earth and Mineral Science 6. School of Sciences 7. School of Postgraduate Studies Many research and Teaching centres including the WASCAL GRP- WACS

  2. WASCAL GRP-WACS This is a German initiative aims at bridging gap in the teaching and research at PhD level in Climate change FUTA is the University hosting the Graduate Research Program in West African Climate system. Admission of ten students every year from ten participating West African countries. Research in Climate change and climate change modelling The Centre housed the University s High Performance Computer Cluster System

  3. History of HPC in FUTA The first HPC facility at the Federal University of Technology Akure was donated by the International Physical Science program Sweden. This is part of donation equipment to the Atmospheric Research group (ARG) in Nigeria The ARG researchers are from the Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife, University of Ibadan and the Federal University of Technology Akure. The HPC facility was donated in 2009 primarily for climate research. of Meteorological

  4. Specifications The cluster is a ten-node SUNFIRE X4150. Each node consist of 2-Quad core thereby having 80 cores in all. The storage is approximately 5TB in all the ten nodes combined inadequate). The system is running on Community (CENTOS) operating system Connectivity via ethernet port of 100/1000 Mbps. Libraries: MPI, netcdf RegCM4 and WRF (grossly Enterprise OS

  5. Challenges Dearth of Qualified personnel to man the system. Power problem. Storage space.

  6. Use The HPC facility in the Federal University of Technology Akure is initially for research and teaching of Meteorological forecasting and climate change. With the proposed expansion in 2014, the following department is expected to use the facility. Computer science Biochemistry Mathematics Engineering Physics etc

  7. Future expansion 1. There is new acquisition of a 12-node clustered system by WASCAL GRP-WACS. The new system is in the process of shipping to Nigeria for Installation and deployment. 2. United National Development Program (UNDP) through the Nigerian Federal Ministry of Environment is donating another HPC system. This HPC is expected in the first quarter of 2014.

  8. Conclusion The HPC use in FUTA is at present at minimal use, only for teaching of postgraduate students. The training in setting-up and management of HPC and expected expansion would enable us to start using HPC at operational level by January 2014. Other field in the University is expected to start using the University HPC for interdisciplinary study.
