The account Matthew 8:23-27 Mark 4:35-41 Luke 8:22-25 Evening time With disciples, they cross the Sea of Galilee toward the Gergesenes A storm arises Jesus is sleeping below
The account Matthew 8:23-27 They awake Jesus fearful they are perishing Jesus arose and rebuked the winds and sea, and there was a great calm The men marveled, Who can this be that even the winds and sea obey Him?
Storms will rise Even the disciples of Jesus were not immune from the storm Storms are a part of life Physically, we need storms. Part of the ecosystem Spiritually, and in life, we face various types of storms (trials, etc.)
Storms will rise Some of the storms of life: Loyalty - Matthew 10:34-39, 6:24 Worldliness 1 John 2:15-17, 2 Timothy 2:22 Busyness Matthew 13:22, Ephesians 5:15-16 Compromise and indifference 2 Corinthians 11:3-4, Ephesians 5:11
Jesus can calm the storm Physically, Jesus performed a miracle by speaking He declared Himself to be the Son of God Romans 1:4, Matthew 14:32-33 Miracles established His credentials Matthew 9:6-8 John 20:30-31
Jesus can calm the storm Jesus can help us in our time of storms He cares He came and died for us Philippians 2:5-8, Romans 5:6-9, John 15:13 He can help with our storms Matthew 28:20, 11:28-30 Hebrews 2:18, 7:25
Jesus can calm the storm Jesus can help us in our time of storms Consider that in times of trouble, the disciples DID turn to Him Matthew 8:25 They were fishermen who knew the waters They realized the power of Jesus by what they said afterward Let us ensure that we do not ONLY use Him in times of emergency. He is ALWAYS there!
We must replace our fear with faith Jesus rebuked them for their fear and lack of faith Fearful means cowardly Revelation 21:8 Their fear involved a lack of faith
We must replace our fear with faith Jesus rebuked them for their fear and lack of faith How often do we let our fears affect our trust in Him? - We don t do what we should James 2:17 Sometimes our faith simply is not as great as it should be God wants us to trust Him? Romans 8:31-39, 1 John 5:4,4:4 Philippians 4:13

There is another passage that addresses the storms we face Matthew 7:24-27 Are you a wise or foolish builder Do you heed the sayings of Jesus (and His apostles)? What are we doing to prepare for the storms?
