  1. Fully Alive 1 Year 8 Term One, Module One: The Bible Lesson 7: Finding Our Way Around the Bible

  2. Short Quiz on the Bible Short Quiz on the Bible 1. The Bible is divided into two main sections What are these two parts called? 2. What is the name given to the first five books of the Bible? 3. What is the name of the first book of the Bible? 4. Name one book in the Old Testament that is about a woman. 5. Name one prophet of the Old Testament. 6. Name the four Gospels. 7. Name one person who wrote a letter in the New Testament. 8. What is the name given to the last book of the Bible? 2

  3. Learning Intentions In this lesson you will be learning: Each of the books in the Bible has a name and is divided into chapters and verses. Bible references are used to help us find particular stories, passages or verses in the Bible. 3

  4. Chapters and Verses in the Bible Open your Bible. Each book in the Bible has a name and is divided into chapters. These chapters are numbered. Find the name of any book in the Bible and then notice the larger numbers on the pages. These are the chapter numbers. Each chapter is further divided into verses. Notice the small numbers on each page. There are the numbers of the verses. 4

  5. A Bible Reference A Bible reference tells us where to look for the story or verse that we require in the Bible. A full Bible reference contains the name of the book, the chapter number and the number(s) of the verse(s). Here is an example: Mark 1:16. The first word Mark is the title of the book in the Bible. The number 1 is the number of the chapter and the number 16 is the number of the verse. Have a go at finding Mark 1:16 in your own Bible. 5

  6. An abbreviated Bible reference Sometimes, the name of the book in the Bible is shortened. For example, Mark is shortened to MK and Luke is shortened to LK . So we might have Mk 1:16 rather than Mark 1:16. Here is another example: 1 Cor 13:4-7. The Cor in this Bible reference is the short form of the name Corinthians . This is the name of St Paul s letter to the Corinthians. The 1 before the name means that it is Paul s first letter to them. The 13 is the number of the chapter and the 4-7 tells us to read from the fourth to the seventh verse. 6

  7. A time to pray Sign of the Cross Teacher Let us place our Bible on the desk before us as we pray together the Prayer on Opening the Bible. All Bless me, O God, so that in opening this Bible I may open my mind and my heart to your Word. May your Word nourish me as it nourished Jesus. Teacher Quietly and reverently, we open our Bible now. We go to Psalm 36, Verse 7. (Pause to allow time to find this.) We will read it aloud together. 7

  8. A time to pray (continued) Teacher Now, silently and respectfully, read the verse again. Think of what it means. God is with you now as you read this verse. Allow God to inspire you in this quiet time. (Pause) Now we close our Bible and we pray the Prayer on Closing the Bible. All Bless me, O God, so that in closing this Bible I may enclose your Word in my heart and in my mind As Jesus enclosed it in his. Amen. Sign of the Cross 8
