  3. FYE Program: Exploring the Issues But presently our initiatives are mostly uncoordinated Our uncoordinated initiatives for first-year students makes WSU an outlier compared to most colleges and universities FYE program defined A purposefully connected set of initiatives designed to strengthen the quality of student learning during and satisfaction with the first year of college (Koch & Gardner, 2014) How coordinated are first year programs on your campus? Young, D. (2018). The 2017 National Survey on The First-Year Experience

  4. FYE Program: Exploring the Issues Faculty play a critical role in any coordinated FYE program First-year students earning a D, F, W, or I in gateway courses often drop out even if they are in good academic standing (Koch & Gardner, 2017) USHE examined 10 system-wide gateway courses defined as high-risk (many DFWI grades), foundational (Gen Ed), and high enrollment (Hartley & Ma, 2018) Measuring Student Access and Success Julie Hartley, David Ma, (USHE) Aug, 2018 CHEM 1210, ENGL 1010, MATH 1010, MATH 1030, MATH 1040, MATH 1060, POLS 1100, MATH 1050, PSY 1010, ZOO 1110

  5. FYE Program: Exploring the Issues WSU s average DFWI rate on these courses (or equivalent) is not very different than other USHE schools Measuring Student Access and Success Julie Hartley & David Ma, (USHE) Aug, 2018

  6. FYE Program: Exploring the Issues Gateway courses show a significant achievement gap by ethnicity in DFWI grades earned Measuring Student Access and Success Julie Hartley & David Ma, (USHE) Aug, 2018

  7. FYE Program: Exploring the Issues Also replicated is the impact of DFWI grades on 8-year graduation rate. Measuring Student Access and Success Julie Hartley & David Ma, (USHE) Aug, 2018

  8. FYE Program: Exploring the Issues An effective, inclusive, and impactful FYE program we will require coordinated efforts of faculty, staff, and administration A first-year program can be strategically designed so that the curriculum and pedagogy of gateway courses are intentionally coordinated with advising and support services At this point, we are assessing all parties interest in partnering to strategically plan such an FYE program Pedagogy First-year students Curriculum Advising Support Services (mentoring and tutoring)

  9. FYE Program: Exploring the Issues QUESTIONS? COMMENTS? CONCERNS? THOUGHTS?

  10. Introduction SSSC subcommittee examined what FYE initiatives other institutions are doing They also compiled information on current WSU initiatives Survey data identified initiatives that may be in a WSU FYE Program Mandatory advising for first year students Personalized connection to a faculty or staff member at WSU. Embedded high impact experiences in first year Welcome week of activities Online and live Orientation Flag some courses as freshman friendly (e.g., has characteristics such as small class size) First Year Communication Plan (i.e. email updates, texting, website) Development of a first year website Adding option for exploratory/ undeclared major to the admissions application Paired Gen ed courses Smaller Gen Ed courses Metamajor FYE Courses (7 week major specific content; rest FYE curriculum).
