Flipped Classroom Activity Constructor for Light Emitting Diode Topic
Design a flipped classroom activity on the topic of Light Emitting Diode (LED) for ECE students. The activity includes out-of-class segments to cover concepts, properties, types, and applications of LEDs, as well as in-class evaluation and community building aspects. Utilize existing content and video resources to facilitate learning and engagement.

About you I am S.Veerakumar, Assistant Professor in the Department of ECE, Knowledge Institute of Technology, Salem. I want to design a flipped classroom activity under the topic Light Emitting Diode(LED) 3 IDP in Educational Technology, IIT Bombay
S.Veerakumar Light Emitting Diode(LED) Optical Communication and Networks ECE IV Year U.G. Students in ECE Knowledge Institute of Technology, Salem ( Affiliated to Anna University) 4 IDP in Educational Technology, IIT Bombay
Out-of-class Activity Design -1 Learning Objective(s) of Out-of-Class Activity At the end of watching the videos, student should be able to Understand the concept of laser, its properties and its types Get knowledge about the construction of laser and its uses Key Concept(s) to be covered 1.Introducion to LED and its applications 2. Properties , types and applications of LED 5 IDP in Educational Technology, IIT Bombay
Out-of-class Activity Design - 2 Main Video Source URL License of Video : How LED's Work Mapping Concept to Video Source https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fP59RSgQqg8 DURATION (in min) CONCEPT VIDEO SEGMENT V1 - 0:02 0.08 0.08 Introduction of Light Emitting Diode V2 0.08-1.15 1.07 V3 1.15-2.18 1.03 Electron , hole recombination and emitting light signal V4 -2.18-3.13 1.00 APPLICATIONS V5 3.13-11.43 8.3 TOTAL DURATION 11.00 min 6 IDP in Educational Technology, IIT Bombay
Out-of-class Activity Design - 3 Aligning Assessment with Learning Objective Expected duration (in min) Additional Instructions (if any) Learning Objective Assessment Strategy Watch Video V -1 1. Properties of Laser Mention 3 properties of Laser 5.00 & answer Q-1 Watch Video V -2 2. Construction of Laser What are the components of laser? & answer Q -2 5.00 10 min Expected activity duration 7 IDP in Educational Technology, IIT Bombay
In-class Activity Design -1 Learning Objective(s) of In - Class Activity At the end of the class, student will be able to 1. Understand the principle of LED 2. Characteristics of LED and its Applications. Key Concept(s) to be covered 1. Interaction of light with matter 2. Varied applications of LED 8 IDP in Educational Technology, IIT Bombay
In-class Activity Design -2 Active Learning activity(ies) that you plan to do 1. Process of emission of photons 2. Think pair - share Explain the strategy by giving details of 1. Concept clarification and explanation of process by peer discussion Justify why the above is an active learning strategy Students will understand the concept and clarify it by peer discussion and with the instructor 9 IDP in Educational Technology, IIT Bombay
In-class Activity Design -2 Peer Instruction Strategy What Teacher Does Q 1: What is the process which is highly responsible for LED? (a)Non coherent signal (b) Coherent signal (c)Present in catroscopic effect (d)Both a and b 10 IDP in Educational Technology, IIT Bombay
In-class Activity Design -2 Peer Instruction Strategy What Teacher Does Q 2:An LED can be tested with an ohmmeter. A)True B) False 11 IDP in Educational Technology, IIT Bombay
In-class Activity Design -2 TPS Strategy What Instructor does Think (~2 minutes) Instruction: Students have to observe the introduction of LED and electron and hole recombination process, after completion of the process it will emitting non coherent types of signal. 12 IDP in Educational Technology, IIT Bombay
In-class Activity Design -2 TPS Strategy What Instructor does Pair (~5 minutes) Instruction: Now pair up and compare your answers. Agree on one final answer. While students are pairing and discussing, instructor goes to 2~3 sections to see what they are doing. 13 IDP in Educational Technology, IIT Bombay
In-class Activity Design -2 TPS Strategy What Instructor does Share (~8 minutes) Instructor asks a group to share their answer with class and see whether there are different answers. After sharing is done, instructor gives feedback on the correct solution and mention the methods of achieving population inversion. In the next iteration of TPS, in the Think Phase we ask students to describe the methods to achieve population inversion In the pair phase we ask students to compare the answers. In the share phase again the different answers are sought. 14 IDP in Educational Technology, IIT Bombay
In-class Activity Design -2 Justify why the above is an active learning strategy In both the above strategies, students are required to go beyond mere listening and execution of prescribed steps. They are required to think deeply about the content they were familiarized in out-of-class and do higher order thinking. There is also feedback provided (either through peer discussion or instructor summary) 15 IDP in Educational Technology, IIT Bombay
