Folk Linguistic Online Mapping Application
Explore the Folk Linguistic Online Mapping application, a tool developed to collect perceptual dialect maps and subjective reactions to language variation online. Led by Prof. Betsy Evans, this project aims to make folk linguistic research more accessible by allowing survey takers to respond to research questions through various map-based tasks. Discover how FLOM enables researchers to create online surveys incorporating maps for framing responses and its current development status. Exciting next steps, including stability enhancements, database rebuilding, and potential MySQL integration, are detailed along with plans to apply for an NEH grant. Join the project team to contribute or test the application!

The Folk Linguistic Online Mapping application
What is Folk Linguistics? Seattle to Spokane project led by Prof. Betsy Evans (Linguistics), and supported by the UW Center for Studies in Demography and Ecology, as well as the UW Language Learning Center.
What is FLOM? FLOM is a tool for collecting perceptual dialect maps and subjective reactions to language variation online. This tool enables researchers to create online surveys that incorporate maps as a means of framing the responses. Originally developed thanks to collaboration between the UW Center for Studies in Demography and Ecology, the Department of Linguistics and the UW Language Learning Center.
What is FLOM? Survey takers can directly respond to research questions by: Drawing on a map (i.e., traditional draw-a-map tasks) using either a mouse or touch screen device Rating predefined and/or user-generated regions for difference characteristics (i.e., pleasantness- correctness and degree of difference tasks) Indicating on a map where an audio clip is perceived to have been uttered (i.e., voice placement tasks) Providing information about personal experiences with different regions of the world, as specified by the researcher (i.e., place experience tasks) Providing general socio-demographic information
A primary goal Make folk linguistic research more accessible. (for those limited technical expertise, or less technical support.)
Where is the project development at? Current (beta) version built with: Leaflet, JavaScript, React, Docker. It is available on Github
Next steps | 1 We are working to: > Make it stable and easily deployable > Rebuild the DB and export system (currently JSON, moving to something more user friendly for ArcGIS and QGIS, as well as human readable, such as CVS) We may eventually: > Set up our server to host instances for remote researchers. > Rebuild system using MySQL and JS (and move away from React and Docker).
Next steps | 2 We have applied for an NEH grant. We are hoping to expand our team. If you are interested in testing or contributing to the project, please contact us.
