Food security in India is crucial for ensuring all individuals have access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food. Despite economic growth, challenges such as underweight children and anaemia persist. Various factors contribute to hunger in India, including food distribution failures, natural disasters, lack of nutritional knowledge, and population growth. Addressing these issues is essential for improving food security and reducing hunger in the country.

Food Security in India What is Food Security : Food security, as defined by the United Nations Committee on World Food Security, means that all people, at all times, have physical, social, and economic access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food that meets their food preferences and dietary needs for an active and healthy life. Food security in the general sense means the availability of minimum nutrients for the body at a long-term level.
ASPECTS OF FOOD SECURITY Three aspects of food security have been determined by the World Health Organization- Food Accessibility Use of Food Grains Food Availability Food The use of food is meant to be mindful of the minimum diet and the requirement of nutrients required by the body availability means food is available according to the needs of the country
ASPECTS OF FOOD SECURITY According to FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization; The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations that leads international efforts to defeat hunger) the fourth side of food security has been added by the FAO. That means the three parties mentioned above are available on a long-term level. In the other words food security needs to be sustainable.
Aspect of Food Security in India Food security in India has been defined by the Planning Commission(Now NITI AAYOG) which is based on the Calorie Consumption Standard (Per day per person calorie consumption). 2100 Calories at the Urban Level 2400 Calories at the Rural Level 2200 Calories at the Average Level
Cont In India 44% of children under the age of 5 are underweight. 72% of infants and 52% of married women have anaemia. Apart from these, another contradiction exists in India. For example Indian economy is developing at a rapid pace. In spite of this, one fourth of the hungry population of the world exists in India alone.
Causes of Hunger Failure of food grain storage and distribution system. Natural Calamity and Disaster. Lack of knowledge about the proper food diet due to illiteracy. More population and poverty. Problems related to Public Distribution System(PDS).
Cont Apart from these, some other causes have emerged in the last days. Such as : food security and impact of climate change food prices and food security political causes (Especially in African Countries). the use of different types of food grains in the production of ethanol increases the food insecurity in many developed countries like USA and Brazil. United state used to export its extra grains to African Countries at a discounted rate, now such export will be affected due to the production of ethanol. Sugar produced by Brazil is exported to many countries. The export of sugar has also been affected by the production of ethanol by Brazil.
Cont Food Security and Food Prices : Food security and price rise have also emerged as a serious challenge to food security. Particularly production, distribution of supporting food grains is defective. For these reasons, the price of fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, eggs, milk and yogurt are increased and these products have to be out of reach of the poor. Which has become a major cause of malnutrition among the poor. storage and
Why solutions to food insecurity? For the above reasons, the situation of food insecurity is required to be resolved so that: Minimum human rights can be protected Reducing mortality at various levels such as reducing infant mortality, reducing maternal mortality and To insure the participation of adults in production through balanced physical development. A large number of steps have been taken and are being taken by the government to ensure food security. (We will talk about this in the next slide)
