Fossil Fuel Reserves Misconception
Discover the truth about fossil fuel reserves in the past 40 years, how they have actually doubled rather than declined, and why it's crucial to actively shift to clean energy despite abundant reserves. Explore Gapminder's enlightening insights and teaching materials for a fact-based worldview.

Known reserves of fossil fuels doubled since 1980 200 trillion m3 71 Natural gas New reserves have been discovered across the world and new extraction techniques have been invented, which means that the transition to clean energy can t wait until we run out of the dirty stuff. 1700 billion barrels 680 Oil 2020 2000 1980 Source: BP gapminder.org/59
QUESTION During the past 40 years the amount of oil and natural gas remaining in known reserves: A. Halved B. Same C. Doubled CORRECT VERY WRONG WRONG RESULTS from U.K. 17% 19% 65% Most wrongly believe fossil fuel reserves declined gapminder.org/59 Data from 150 respondents in Google Surveys, 2021
See how Gapminder uses these slides in the video called: Fossil fuel reserves aren t running out How to use this slideshow 1. Test your audience with the fact question 2. Discuss why most believe fossil fuels are running low 3. Show the trends of doubling reserves 4. Discuss how increasing reserves impact the transition to clean fuels. Why Gapminder made these slides Most people think that fossil fuel reserves have declined, which sounds intuitively right because we have used a lot of fossil fuels. But in reality, the known reserves today are twice as large as they were forty years ago, because new extraction methods and new discoveries have increased faster than consumption. This is important because, people who wrongly believe we are running out of fossil fuels think we can passively wait for clean energy to automatically take over. They don t realise we must actively decide to shift away from fossil fuels even if there s still a lot of it in the ground.
