OBJECTIVES At the end of this presentation the trainers will be able to sensitize and guide faculty to design an effective program for learners on the foundation course The overall objective of foundation course would be to sensitize the learners with essential knowledge and skills which will lay a sound foundation for their pursuit of learning across the subjects in MBBS course and later on a career in medicine. GMR 9.1.2 to 9.1.3 2

  3. INTENT To provide a bridge course for students from different boards, language, backgrounds and cultures Adequately prepare them for learning and career in medicine 3

  4. Foundation Course (one month) 30 hrs Orientation 35 hrs Skills Module 8 hrs Field visit to community health center 40 hrs Professional Development including ethics (AETCOM) 40 hrs Language/ computer skills 22 hrs Sports and Extracurricular activities 25 days of seven hours(8-4 with a lunch break of one hour) 175 hrs 4

ORIENTATION- 30 HRS (Single block in 1st week) The medical profession and the physicians role in society The MBBS program & documents from MCI Alternate health systems in the country and history of medicine Health care system and its delivery National health priorities and policies Principals of primary care The medical college and hospital GMR 9.1.1 6

At the end of the session(s) the participant will be able to facilitate a small group discussion on the profession with novice students where Students is introduced to the profession, its priveleges and responsibilites and its role in society His/her expectations are elicited His/her fears as assuaged Relates his/her learning to the care of the patient Opportuniies for professional and personal growth are explored 7

  8. Expectations - self, family, society Losing out on youth versus hard work Work load Learning versus memorizing Balancing personal & professional needs Under versus overachieving 8

  9. SKILL MODULE - 35 HOURS Train the student on First Aid Basic Life Support Safety Handwashing Needle/scalpel stick injuries Immunization requirements of health care professionals Concept of biosafety Handling biomedical/ bio-waste management GMR 9.1.1 9

  10. Sample session - Time management At the end of the session(s) the participant will be able to develop and deliver exercise and experiences for the novice student in Prioritization Time management Stress management 10

Facilitator guide Create a task where participants have to chose among different time constrains but equally important things in different spheres Ask participants to dicuss their choices and why Initiate a discussion on how one can help students prioritize, manage time, to conflicting needs and perform better 11

PROFESSIONALISM & ETHICS ( 40 HOURS) Concept of professionalism and ethics Consequences of unethical and unprofessional behaviour Value of integrity, honesty and respect during interaction with peers, friends, seniors and faculty other health care workers and patients Functioning as part of a health care team Introduction to AETCOM 12

  13. Professional Develpoment including Ethics- sample session Step 1:- Display a video/Role Play of an unethical behaviour and stimulate discussion Step 2:- Demonstrate the ethical behaviour 13

  14. FIELD VISIT TO COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTRE- 8 HOURS Orientation to community Visit to a community health center Intorduction to health care workers and their role Introduction to and interaction with patients GMR 9.1.1 14

  15. LANGUAGE & COMPUTER SKILLS (40 HOURS) Enable the student to acquire enhanced skills in:- Language Computer learning 15

  16. Contd....... Learners mey be enrolled in one of the following programs which will be run concurrently:- a. Local language program b. English language program c. Computer skills These may be done in the last two hours of the day for the duration of the Foundation Course 16

Sample session - Language Skills At the end of the session(s) the participant will be able to identify and address percieved difficulty in english and the local language, communication, use of technology etc. in students, creating awareness and provide appropriate resources and remediation 17

  18. SPORTS & EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES- 22 HOURS Sports (to be used through the foundation course as protected 04hrs/ week) Leisure and extracurricular activity (to be used through the foundation course as protected 02hrs/ week) 18

  19. EXTRACT FROM GMR 9.1.6 Institutions shall develop learning modules and identify the appropriate resource persons for their delivery 9.1.7 The time committed for the foundation course may not be used for any other curricular activity 19

  20. ATTENDENCE & ASSESSMENT The Foundation Course will have compulsory75% attendance (This will be certified by the Dean of the college) Feedback,comments or grades about performence may be given The performance will not contribute to IA Students feedback to be taken in a structured format(program evaluation) 20

  21. WHOSE RESPONSIBILITY??? Foundation course will be organized by the coordinator appointed by the dean and will be under supervision of Heads of Pre-clinical Departements 21

  22. RESPOSIBILITES OF DEAN OF THE MEDICAL COLLEGE To head a committee for Foundation Course implementation with one preclinical HOD as Convener and the other three and MEU Coordinator / co- Coordinator as members To allocate a venue for the foundation course (preferably other than the Lecture class rooms) To allocate the resources for the conduct of the foundation course (including those related to community visits, external resource persons etc..) To conduct at least two meetings with Curriculum Committee and the committee mentioned above in the month preceding the foundation course To arrange the meeting with parents and faculty. 22

  23. RESPOSIBILITIES OF THE CURRICULUM COMMITTEE To schedule the sessions for one month and allocate the sessions to the resource persons (including external resource persons from outside the college, if necessary) To monitor the smooth conduct of the program To coordinate with the administration and clinical faculty To monitor and submit reports to the Dean 23

  24. RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE MEU To arrange the sensitisation programs for all faculty members (including the Dean & HODs) To ensure the coordination between the above two committees To train and orient the resource persons To collect the reports and coordinate with NC/ RC. To ensure that at least one MEU faculty should be present in all sessions. 24
