European Academy for Industrial Management (AIM): Joint Meeting on 15th September 2022 Foundation for Professional Ergonomics: Update Robert J. Smillie, President www.ergofoundation.org 2/21/2025 1
What is the Foundation for Professional Ergonomics (FPE) The FPE, established in 2004, is a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing professionalism in Ergonomics through educational activities and awards. Former Directors from the Board of Certification in Professional Ergonomics (BCPE) initiated FPE to promote ergonomics professionalism. [Note: BCPE, as an accredited certification body, cannot do that.] Mission The mission of FPE is to benefit the public by: providing leadership in evolving and growing the ergonomics profession; bridging gaps between research, education and practice; and promoting professionalism in ergonomics practice.
FPE Goals Establish scholarships to promote the study and practice of human factors and ergonomics internationally. Recognize graduate students via the Dieter W. Jahns Student Practitioner Award and practicing professionals via the Ergonomics Practitioner of the Year Award. Promote, develop, and deliver courses on professional issues and technical topics for professionals seeking Board of Certification in Professional Ergonomics (BCPE) certification. Support Ergonomists without Borders to provide ergonomics expertise and resources to ergonomists throughout the world.
FPE ACCOMPLISHMENTS: 2021 Impact Grants: aim to provide seed funding for small (pilot) projects that support the development of professional ergonomics worldwide. The expected budget for proposals should be between $500 and $2,500. A total of eighteen high-quality proposals were received from Columbia, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. Two proposals deemed to have the highest potential impact on the practice of ergonomics worldwide were selected. "Development of a Certification System and Core Competencies for Professional Ergonomists in Thailand", proposed by a team led by Dr. Manida S. Neubert, CPE, Faculty of Technology, Khon Kaen University, Thailand. "Ergonomics Intervention Design for Traditional Textile Painting: Batik Industry in Malaysia , proposed by Dr. Dian Darina Indah Daruis of the Faculty of Engineering at the National Defense University of Malaysia.
FPE ACCOMPLISHMENTS: 2021/2022 FPE is coordinating with NIOSH, AIHA, and IEA to translate readily available ergonomic tools and techniques into multiple languages. When completed, the tool sets will be available on several websites FPE, IEA, and AIHA. Arabic and Spanish versions are complete. Work is under way to translate the tools into Mandarin.
Siobhan Merriman winner of the 2022 Dieter W. Jahns Student Practitioner Award. FPE ACCOMPLISHMENTS: 2022 Siobhan Merriman, a PhD student at the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, University of Southampton in the United Kingdom is the winner of the 2022 Dieter W. Jahns Student Practitioner Award. The project addressed Level 4 automation (High Automation the automation performs all driving tasks and monitors the road environment; drivers not required to perform continuous monitoring or takeovers as vehicle transitions to a minimal risk condition). An online video-based training program to improve drivers mental models for when Level 4 automation can be activated. Drivers trust in automation was measured before and after training. The training reduced drivers trust in Level 4 automation implying that drivers initially have misplaced trust in the capabilities of AVs, which, without training, may influence their unsafe interactions with them on the road. The training supports the safe use of Level 4 AVs by helping drivers activate the automation in appropriate road conditions.
Dr. Gregory Bedny, the 2022 Ergonomics Practitioner of the Year. FPE ACCOMPLISHMENTS: 2022 The FPE 2022 Ergonomics Practitioner of the Year Award presented to: Dr. Gregory Bedny, posthumously. Gregory Z. Bedny was a Ukrainian-American and was the founder of the influential Systemic-Structural Activity Theory (SSAT). He designed qualitative and quantitative methods for assessing human performance's complexity, reliability, and efficiency. While a professor at Odesa State Academy of Civil Engineering and Architecture, he created the first Ukrainian ergonomics laboratory and took part in writing the first program for teaching ergonomics at Ukrainian colleges. After moving to the US in 1989, he taught psychology and ergonomics at Essex County College and at the New Jersey Institute of Technology.
AIM AND FPE: POTENTIAL COLLABORATION AREAS Organizing joint webinars on selected topics of interest to both organizations o Ergonomics and Industrial Management Improving the work environment Sharing relevant training & educational materials o Translating NIOSH toolset into French and Italian Collaborating and mutually supporting joint cooperation with other non- profit organizations o Investigate mutual areas of interest with HFES and CIEHF
AIM AND FPE: POTENTIAL COLLABORATION AREAS Explore development of joint publication opportunities Investigate how to collaborate on jointly sponsored book projects o Commonalities of Ergonomics and Industrial Management o Jointly (AIM_FPE) edited book on Human Dimensions of Industry 5.0 (to be published by Taylor & Francis) Promote international research and practice in the selected areas that benefits the global society at large. o FPE Impact Grants (joint sponsorship of such grants next year)
