FRCP: What We Do We provide development services in organizational philanthropy AKA Foundation Fundraising
Ideation What do you want to do? Who will be involved? How long will it take? How much will it cost? Who will benefit? Gathering your ideas early will help as you start your search for funding sources and will streamline the funding process!
Finding Arts & Humanities Funders Targeted funder profiles and prospect libraries Request for proposals (RFP) tracking and distribution Active RFPs are always available on our AirTable database! Current Fellowships are also on AirTable Subscribe to our monthly digest Campus Resources Foundation Directory Online FRCP Website
Examples of A&H funded projects at UCB What are some specific examples of arts and humanities projects that have received funding? Mellon Foundation New Directions Fellowship Luce Foundation Berkeley Center for the Study of Religion grant Max Kade Foundation fellowships and travel grants in German Studies
Raising Your Profile With Foundations Use and expand your network. Attend conferences/Symposiums/Workshops Partnering with community-based organizations Partnering with others on campus Invite program staff to events as think partners and to raise awareness of your work Some foundations are OK with cold introductions via email, but this isn t ideal When it makes sense, Requests for Proposals (RFP s)!
What do you propose? Questions to consider: What are you trying to do? State your objectives using no jargon. Are you addressing a problem in the field? (e.g. gaps in study, underrepresented perspectives) What are the outcomes/deliverables? (E.g. publication, seminar, series of outreach events) If you are successful, what difference will your work make? How much will it cost? How long will it take? How will you know if it is successful?
Writing Tight Proposals Concise Persuasive Accessible Memorable Exciting Brohaugh, W. (2007) Write Tight: Say What You Mean with Precision and Power, Sourcebooks, Naperville
Some general writing tips: Minimize use of jargon and technical language Answer each question directly; avoid tangents Avoid duplication of information Get review help from a diverse audience
Questions from survey Can you comment on Community Foundations as they seem to be more education/health/policy driven rather than arts/humanities.
Questions from survey Grant writing takes a lot of time and too much of it can set back the project itself. How to assess which opportunities are most worthwhile to pursue? How much time seeking funding is healthy?
Questions from survey What is the process for obtaining exceptional PI status?
Questions from survey Would it be possible to also cover how one would seek endowment opportunities?
Questions from survey There is considerable concern about exponentially increased bureaucracy and its burdens for grants, even those that do not involve complex budgets, teams, human subjects, etc. Please address SPO and potential burdens. What is the timeline for internal feedback and approval via SPO?
Questions from survey What is the process for ensuring wires don't get crossed with multiple applicants to the same grantor from the university?
Questions from survey How can one send grant dollars to a community partner? How should a grant be structured to allow collaborations with arts/community partners?
Questions from survey Are there emerging funders in the leagues of Mellon, Templeton, Luce etc that will be important five years from now?
Questions? Thank you! Follow-up? Questions? David Siegfried dsiegfried@berkeley.edu Jillian Parlee jillianp@berkeley.edu Margaret Guerrero mguerrero@berkeley.edu
