  1. FREEDOM TRAINING CURSES, COVENANTS, AND THE TONGUE

  2. Overview Curses Biblical examples Our words Tongue issues Covenants

  3. Curses Like a sparrow in its flitting, like a swallow in its flying, a curse that is causeless does not alight. Prov 26:2 Curses carry spiritual weight Curses can be done by people or God Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits. Prov 18:21

  4. Curse: II King 5 Elisha was a prophet of God II Kings 5 Naaman is healed of leprosy after visiting Elisha. Gehazi, Elisha s servant, is greedy and goes after Naaman for a reward that Elisha turned down. Elisha pronounces the judgment in verse 27, Therefore the leprosy of Naaman shall cling to you and to your descendants forever. So he [Gehazi] went out from his presence a leper, like snow.

  5. Curses: Numbers 22-23 Balak, the king of Moab calls for Balaam Come now, curse this people for me, since they are too mighty for me for I know that he whom you bless is blessed, and he whom you curse is cursed. v6 Balaam ends up blessing Israel three or four times And Balak said to Balaam, What have you done to me? I took you to curse my enemies, and behold, you have done nothing but bless them. And he answered and said, Must I not take care to speak what the LORD puts in my mouth? v11-12

  6. Curse: Jericho Joshua laid an oath on them at that time, saying, Cursed before the LORD be the man who rises up and rebuilds this city, Jericho. At the cost of his firstborn shall he lay its foundation, and at the cost of his youngest son shall he set up its gates. Joshua 6:26 About 550 years later: In his days Hiel of Bethel built Jericho. He laid its foundation at the cost of Abiram his firstborn, and set up its gates at the cost of his youngest son Segub, according to the word of the LORD, which he spoke by Joshua the son of Nun. I King 16:34

  7. Jesus curses the fig tree He [Christ] was hungry. And seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to see if he could find anything on it. When he came to it, he found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. And he said to it, May no one ever eat fruit from you again. And his disciples heard it. Mark 11:12-14 As they passed by in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered away to its roots. And Peter remembered and said to him, Rabbi, look! The fig tree that you cursed has withered. Mark 11:20-21

  8. Word curses Words are more accountable than emotions You have heard that it was said to those of old, You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment. But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, You fool! will be liable to the hell of fire. Matt 5:21-22 Fool: a term of utter vilification and reproach, empty intellectually, senseless, worthless But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person. Matt 15:18

  9. Word curses Let them curse, but you will bless! They arise and are put to shame, but your servant will be glad! Ps 109:28 the tongue is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. James 3:9-10

  10. Activation Repent of any word curses you have said to yourself (ex. stupid, ugly, should die, can t do anything right, sinner, alcoholic, ) Repent of any word curses you have said to someone else Give God any word curses someone has said over you Break the power of these word curses

  11. Example It has been reported that during the Vietnam war, the people of the land cursed American soldiers that were there to fight. They cursed them with homelessness and wandering and other things. We now see these traits in our veteran population. The veterans from this war are different than many of the other wars near the same time period. We can break these curses in the name of Jesus off our lives.

  12. Activation Ask the Holy Spirit if there is any area of your life that might have a curse on it? In the power of Jesus, let s break any curses put on us Neighbor s land, business, or animals Marriages Children Land, country, city, state Position or role (ex. president, treasurer, elders ) Calling or gifting (ex. prophets) Enemies (ex. Vietnam war veterans, )

  13. Other tongue issues Gossip, slander, profanity, lying, complaining For we all stumble in many ways. And if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body James 3:2 If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person's religion is worthless. James 1:26 Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. Eph 4:29 Do not speak evil against one another, brothers. James 4:11

  14. Tongue issues The one who conceals hatred has lying lips, and whoever utters slander is a fool. When words are many, transgression is not lacking, but whoever restrains his lips is prudent. The tongue of the righteous is choice silver; the heart of the wicked is of little worth. The lips of the righteous feed many, but fools die for lack of sense. Prov 10:18-21 Whoever belittles his neighbor lacks sense, but a man of understanding remains silent. Whoever goes about slandering reveals secrets, but he who is trustworthy in spirit keeps a thing covered. Prov 11:12-13 A dishonest man spreads strife, and a whisperer separates close friends. Prov 16:28 Whoever covers an offense seeks love, but he who repeats a matter separates close friends. Prov 17:9

  15. Tongue issues Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life. Put away from you crooked speech, and put devious talk far from you. Prov 4:23-24 But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices Col 3:8-9 But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death. Rev 21:8 perhaps there may be quarreling, jealousy, anger, hostility, slander, gossip, conceit, and disorder. II Cor 12:20

  16. Tongue issues They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. Though they know God's righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them. Rom 1:29-31 Repent of any lies, slander, gossip, boasting, obscene talk, quarreling

  17. Covenants and dedications Covenants, vows, marriage, oath, Adultery is two sins: covenant breaking and sexual immorality Some people are dedicated in other religions or to other gods at birth. These need to be broken in the power of Jesus.

  18. Gibeonite treaty God told Joshua to destroy all Canaanites, including the Gibeonites But when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and to Ai, they on their part acted with cunning And they went to Joshua We have come from a distant country, so now make a covenant with us. But the men of Israel said to the Hivites, Perhaps you live among us; then how can we make a covenant with you? They said to him, From a very distant country your servants have come, because of the name of the LORD your God Here is our bread behold, it is dry and crumbly And these garments and sandals of ours are worn out from the very long journey. So the men took some of their provisions, but did not ask counsel from the LORD. And Joshua made peace with them and made a covenant with them, to let them live, and the leaders of the congregation swore to them. Joshua 9:3-15

  19. Gibeonite treaty broken 400 years later: Now there was a famine in the days of David for three years, year after year. And David sought the face of the LORD. And the LORD said, There is bloodguilt on Saul and on his house, because he put the Gibeonites to death. Although the people of Israel had sworn to spare them, Saul had sought to strike them down in his zeal for the people of Israel and Judah. II Sam 21:1-3

  20. Jephthahs hasty vow Then the Spirit of the LORD was upon Jephthah... And Jephthah made a vow to the LORD and said, If you will give the Ammonites into my hand, then whatever comes out from the doors of my house to meet me when I return in peace from the Ammonites shall be the LORD's, and I will offer itup for a burnt offering. So Jephthah crossed over to the Ammonites to fight against them, and the LORD gave them into his hand twenty cities, with a great blow. So the Ammonites were subdued before the people of Israel. Then Jephthah came to his home at Mizpah. And behold, his daughter came out to meet him with tambourines and with dances. She was his only child... And as soon as he saw her, he tore his clothes and said, Alas, my daughter! You have brought me very low, and you have become the cause of great trouble to me. For I have opened my mouth to the LORD, and I cannot take back my vow. And at the end of two months, she returned to her father, who did with her according to his vow that he had made. Judges 11: 29-40

  21. Good covenant Jonathan and David: the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as himself... Then Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself.Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was on him and gave it to David, with his armor, including his sword and his bow and his belt. I Sam 18:1-4 So Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, Jonathan made David vow again because of his love for him, because he loved him as he loved his own life.. As for the agreement of which you and I have spoken, behold, the LORD is between you and me forever. I Sam 20:23 Thus he said to him, Do not be afraid, because the hand of Saul my father will not find you, and you will be king over Israel and I will be next to you; and Saul my father knows that also. So the two of them made a covenant before the LORD; and David stayed at Horesh while Jonathan went to his house. I Sam 23:17-18 David cares for Mephibosheth, son of Jonathan. II Sam 9

  22. Covenants Break any unholy covenants or dedications you or others have made for you in Jesus Name Have you joined any unholy organizations? Were you dedicated in a temple to an idol? Covenants like marriage and salvation should be honored and never broken

  23. Questions Have you ever spoken something negative about yourself that has came to pass? For example: "I'm sick and tired..." or "If I don't quit typing, I'm going to get arthritis!" Has your parents, or those in authority over you spoken out a curse over you? For example: "You'll never amount to anything!" or "You'll never get out of debt" or "You're so dumb" Have you ever made a vow out of anger? If so, what? For example: "I'll never let anybody push me around again!" or "I'm never going to be hurt again!" Have you ever wished to die? Have you ever said it? If you have made any vows or oaths, what are they? (blood covenants, signed covenants, unholy membership vows, )
